Hi.

Don't know if we should be having an issue with it, or if we should or could complain.. But the chimney of next door's house is emitting quite a lot of smoke, and sometimes it feels like we are slightly suffocating when we walk outside. Just opening the back door causes the smell to get in the house and all through it and it does indeed smell.

What would you do? Would it be cause for complain?

Cheers.

Is it normal or just the way the wind is blowing?

First step I would take would be to see whether it was in a smokeless zone and if not what was permitted.

Where are you, are you in a no smoke zone ? Chimneys shouldn't blow downwards unless your above them

It is nuisance and covered by law, speak to them first, but if you go any further the police / solicitors will ask you to diarise and take pics etc

We're not in a no smoke zone, quite a few people have fires in their homes, coal fires, wood fires etc...

I think it's just the wind but we don't know if the smoke is excessive or not?? It's effecting the health of my mum, she is constantly coughing cause of it. I'm not that bothered it's my parents really.

Takes some pictures, to be honest I get the feeling it is probably just a normal amount of chimney smoke and you are being fussy.

Do you go out every morning and find smoke causing issues with breathing? I'm not talking about smoking cigs if you smoke them.

Take a picture and show us how much smoke is there.

With the greatest respect if your mum has serious repository problems even a bit of dust would cause problems and it would be over the top to stop someone using their heating.

You could suggest smokeless fuel to them.

Smoke from a chimney should be rising, unless they have a ground level chimney you shouldn't really even notice they have a fire on.

Is your mum putting her head over the chimney and inhaling?

By the time the little amount of smoke that a chimney gives out even manages to blow its way down to street level, it should have dissipated so much as to not be a problem.

I'm going to side with whoever else it was, and make the possibly bad assumption that you or your mum are being fussy. I don't doubt that you might be able to smell it though.

The chimney is on the roof of the house......

And it blows down to ground level and sometimes the garden has a cloud of smoke in it, and it DOES get in your throat enough to cause discomfort whilst trying to breath.

heavy smoke?

I don't know, wood? Even when it does not appear to be clouded in smoke when breathing in it is still strong.

If it's blowing down to ground level in the garden them something is very wrong, smoke from a chimney simply shouldn't do that. That's the whole reason for having a chimney, it carries smoke up and away - that smoke doesn't then sink to the ground unless you have some seriously weird wind directions going on!

That's more than possible though, I've seen it happen a few times and a mates neighbours have complained because its been drifting downwards

Maybe their chimney hasn't been cleaned in years and it's all nicely blocked?

Go down and burn their Christmas tree; at least it will smell nice :)

Is the chimney flue internal or does is rise vertically outside the house?

Possible that the chimney could only be single skinned and loosing to much heat if it is external, reducing the flow/draught inside.

The chimney may not be high enough, I asked a builder mate why mine was so high and apparently it's because of the possible downdraughts caused by the surrounding area, hence they're built high to stop the smoke reaching ground level. No idea what you can do tbh.
