*** The Official ATI Radeon HD 6970 & 6950 Reviews, Discussion and Overclocking Thread ***

I see the problem, look at your fan speed it looks like it never breaks 57%. Maybe do a custom fan profile to ramp it up quicker with temps.

I don't even think ccc has a fan profile thing where you can specify temps to ramp the fan up. I know it has manual control though =/

Setting the fan to ramp to 40ish seems to kep it under 90c. Round about 86c or so max.

Amazes me even with a vapour chamber this thing is still pulling mad temperatures.

Well it seems that turning up power control settings a few % in the overdrive panel sorted out the downclocking. Still can't say im thrilled about load temps. When i went quad sli temps of the original card increased a few degrees, not sure if crossfire is viable when 1 well ventilated card hits 90c.

With 45% fanspeed highest my 6970 has hit is 75c.(usually is around 70c max.)

Also the poorly designed backplating is what's making the vapor chamber not cool to it's full potential. :(

Hmmm, mines in a small ass HTPC case (Silverstone grandia 05.) and it never gets anywhere near those temps. Yours looks to be behaving nothing like mine.

I left it looping heaven to test my overclock for 3 hours yesterday and it hovered around 80c (Just under.) and the fan never went over 37% @ 930/1400 (It crashes higher on stock volts.)

*Edit* Here you go, re-ran it this morning, house is a touch warmer as the heatings on full blast.

Anybody know if MSI Afterburner will support the changing of voltages with these new cards any time soon? I'm keen to get overclocking mine once I get a waterblock for it?

Cheers

Tom

Hmm... I bought one of these yesterday... (6950)

And am regretting it a lot. I'm waiting for OCUK to dispatch it... maybe I should webnote them and ask to swap it for the 570...

No CUDA is putting me off...

Unwinder who writes the program is waiting to receive the card from MSI, when he does it shouldn't take long.

The 69** uses a new and very in-depth voltage controller, so hopefully we can do some good stuff with it once its unlocked.

Ok, seems like I might be having temperature problems too. HIS 6970 idling at 50C? I tested today with the heat off and the windows open to make the room nice and cool and its still 49-50C. Seems far too high from what I've seen in reviews. Haven't really put it under any stress yet to see what the max temps are like, but even Eve pushes it well over 60C and thats with the fan around 35% which is very noticeable.

Is this the norm? I really hope not.

Never mind. I didn't realise that by disabling overdrive it lowered the core and memory clocks further than when enabled. Now idling at 33C. Wondering why the core clock only goes to 850 in 3D apps. I thought the default clock was 880?

Just cancel the order, no point waiting for it to be dispatched (and causing ocuk more hassle). Seems strange that you should order a 6950 when you want CUDA, but hey ho, if that's what you want, change it.

No, that is not the norm. Check out the reviews (links on first page of this thread), temps shouldn't be that high unless your ambient is high.
