My iPhone is insured (and I could just sync my backup over to the replacement), but I'd still use the locater thingy just for the lulz.
 
regardless that its an iphone, that seems to make it some kind of wondrous item, there are texts on there saying please can i have it back, for the love of all that is kind and just, return it to its owner. your mates a chavy little scrote thief.
 
Would the chap that has lost it get it unlocked by apple if he got it back after locking the IMEI?

This just annoys the hell out of me; either you mate will keep it and be a tool, or he will return it and get the reward which he doesnt deserve in the slightest. I found a phone in the local park once and just called the number for dad in the contacts. Spoke to some bloke who came and picked it up.

He barely said thank you and buggered off again but screw it, I hate it when people dont return things that are quite obviously valuable to the owner. Find out the owners number, steal your mates phone and give it to him.
 
Didn't think their were numptys like that anymore. Tell him he is utter scum and how he would like it if the same happened to him. In fact tell me where he lives, I'm furious by this thread!!!!!

Why would you hand it into the police station when the owner is sending texts offering a reward for it's return?

@OP - your colleague deserves a punch in the face - you should simply take the phone from him, contact the owner and arrange for it's return = good kama for you if you're into that stuff and perhaps also a small reward.

It was only 9pm, I was with her and the pub was packed, she had it but said she put it in her back pocket so not very clever and she didnt have it insured, crazy.

It wouldnt be apple do it, it would be whichever network carrier its on that needs to unblock it.

You need to give proof of purchase that you purchased the phone yourself, IE reiept with the IMEI number on it, or if it was an over the phone upgrade ringing customer services who will have a record of the IMEI shipped there.

But once you give this they can unblock it easily.

Sadly phone insurance is a rip off. I got a new phone earlier this year and went to insure it until I read the small print. The excess is enormous. The premiums are high. There is an upper limit which is lower than the cost of the phone.

Phone insurance is honestly not worth it, unless you get it free with a bank account. For some reason that insurance seems much more economical.

My friend was being sold insurance in a shop and we looked at the small print and it said it excluded all instances of negligence.

Which means it doesn't cover just about everything. What a joke.

Indeed. Leaving it behind anywhere, dropping it are both excluded at the option of the insurer. It really was stunning to read through it all and realise how much of a scam it is.

That wasn't even me going for the providers insurance, that was me looking at third party insurance which relies on people wanting it rather than saying "uh ok" to a salesperson.
 
I started a thread about this when it happened but my youngest daughter found an IPhone at Leeds festival and for 48 hours people only texted the phone and we couldn't get into it.
I waited and waited for somebody to actually ring it but I suppose I was asking for a miracle.
After about 50 texts & Facebook messages I thought the owner must be a dick so I hovered over the program that would make it mine but a text came in off the Dad pleading for his daughter to get in touch.
That hit my parental conscience so I waited until a really stupid Facebook name come up and did a search.
I eventually found the girl who had facebook'd that she'd lost her phone and set about messaging her and at least 25 of her friends but still no answer.
Around midnight I got an old person who obviously knew the old method of speaking to someone and it was her Dad from the USA.
He passed messages on but I only got texts for 2 hours which I can't reply to.
Eventually her Uncle who knows how to speak to people rang up and we gave him an address where she could pick it up.
She arrived, forgot to bring a reward, begged my daughter to lend her £10 to get home and she would send it on.
We've heard nothing and my daughter has learnt a lesson.
I really wish I had pressed OK when I had the chance to.
