You really shouldn't sit that close. You will get square eyes.

Arms length if lent back, but I usually sit upright/lean in to base of arm when concentrating (gaming).
In work, if it's before the sun is high in the sky, I lean into so I'm about a foot away - 30" monitor so really bad. As above if the sun isn't trying to rape my corneas.

You're not supposed to press it against the screen. Try moving away then you might see something.
