Best NAS (without HDD) for ~£200

I will do - although I use usenet more than torrents to be honest. The feature list is so impressive. It's probably geared for office use with bucket loads of users but I'll have a max of 6 machines connected. Maybe overkill from that side of things but the performance is ace. Just get it ordered!

have a look at the HP microserver head, you can get one for around £110 after cash back. I have one, nice piece of kit

I am very tempted to, but im going to wait until after xmas and hope for a sale :P

I agree, the features list is very impressive!

Cheers for your thoughts ringo....im definitely getting one of these synology 211 units in the new year...think ill prob go with the 211 rather than the j model as i need and want something thats quick and fast especially when im transferring 5gb+ Blu ray rips. Just need to find a pair of quick hds that wont be too noisy i suppose as ill have it in my bedroom.

A quick question about the gigabit lan...at the moment my network is 10/100 as is common i suppose...my router is 10/100 as well but i do have a gigabit switch that im not using at the moment...so if i connect that to my network...am i going to get a bottleneck seeing as from the gigabit switch the NAS will be gigabit but from the router it will be 10/100....any advice on how i should get this setup so i dont suffer from rubbish transfer speeds...at the moment my network is setup like this:

DSL----Router----laptop....so my laptop is connected direct to the router...i also have my playon mini hd streamer connected to my router too. So would i be correct in thinking that i should set it up like this:

DSL----router----gigabit switch---laptop/NAS/Playon streamer???

What do you think??...any advice would be mucho mucho appreciated mate.

Hi Spawn,

I'm no network whizz so maybe someone else can help you on that side. I have a number of machines connected to a Gb switch and one connected directly to the router. Even if you are on a 100 network will this not be ample for the 50mb/s upload speeds?

The Samsung disks were the cheapest option for me. There is some noise when writing but I guess NAS units don't come with sound proofing like PC cases do. When the unit is idle it is whisper quiet. Great job.

I would never pay £250+HD cost for a NAS. I would rather build a Intel Atom NAS box myself but that's me :)

No bottle neck as long as all of your devices are connected to the gigabit switch.

Thanks, thats all i needed to know...i guess ill just connect all my devices through to my gigabit switch then connect that through to the router....seems like thats the best option.

No worries ringo, my laptop makes enough noise as it is with the fan but its never stopped me from sleeping...i suppose the only time the NAS will make noise is when im transferring stuff over or streaming but then ill be awake and not asleep.

Just waiting for my bonus to come through so i can order the 211 with a couple of HDs and get it all setup and hopefully clear my room of the clutter thats currently occupying my room.

Ok so i finally bit the bullet so to speak...ended up ordering the Synology DS211J from OCUK with a pair of 1.5tb seagate barracuda hds to go in the NAS unit.

Was umming and ahh'ing about whether i should have gone for the DS211 or the 211J but ended up with the 211J instead as i couldnt really justify the extra £60 or so on the 211...other than a faster CPU and more RAM...theres not much in it i suppose.

Hopefully will have it by tommorrow and will set it up and then transfer my stuff over ie Blu ray RIPs then get it set up to stream the media over to my tv via my playon minihd box. Hopefully it will all go well, fingers crossed.

I take it that setting up the NAS box is pretty simple??.

Yes!

Synology has a quick start wizard where you can get your volumes set up, configure RAID, set up users/passwords, set up file shares, set up applications etc.

The DSM 3.0 is brilliant - so easy to use. I love my DS211. I haven't used half the features yet but it's doing its job as a simple fileserver very nicely at the moment.

Nice buy..Have fun with it :)

Make sure you download the latest firmware file - you will need it before you start! And make sure that the version supports the model. Each firmware supports different models I think.

Sorry which firmware??...for the NAS unit??

Yep - you need to install DSM before use.

Ahhh right...well ive opened her up and its a very nice tidy unit...installed the HDs but not going to get a chance until later tonight to start setting it up but im very impressed with the NAS unit so far....have to go out in a bit with the fiancee to have a look at some sofa sets shes had her eyes on:(...damn women and them getting in the way of my toys:p

I have had the DS207 (the last two digits signify the year model) for nearly four years now and I have been delighted with it. Now looking into getting a 211 version and quite fancy the 211+. Write performance is a BIG factor when backing up multi hundred gigabytes worth of files, trust me. The 207 is sloooowwwww (7 Mbytes/sec :o ) in this department and the 211+ has 100Mbyte plus performance.

I would be interested to know of your experiences with the 211 and the 211j versions (as opposed to the 211+) and what you think of the write performance - personally I reckon these will be too slow to back up your PC on a regular basis - unless your PC is on 24x7 in which case it wouldn't matter.

Well i went for the 211J as its basically the same as the 211 but with less ram and slower CPU...tbh from what i have researched i dont think it will make much of a difference...the real use for my NAS is streaming my blu ray movies to my LCD via my media streamer as my ext hd is running out of space and i didnt fancy spunking another £100+ on a bigger ext hd, which will then take up more space on my desk in my room.

So at least with the 211J and the 2 1.5tb hds i have, i should have plenty of room...if more is needed then ill just buy bigger hds but at the moment i think im pretty set for some time now. I will be backing up my data as well but then i dont have tons of data to backup...the only things that will reside on the NAS is my movie collection, mp3 collection and a few other bits and bobs.

Have just installed the hds now so am about to connect it up and set it all up....will post back on the read/write performance of the NAS unit.
