Multiple stores in the same shopping centre

Well if that's your criteria for 'near WC1', I live 'near' the Eiffel Tower.

I think there's one Greggs in the City, and none in the choicer areas of SW London. What do those two areas have in common? Very few poor people.

what like the 15 within distance of SW19 ?

I realise Subway restaurants are franchises but I think I counted 5 in Torquay town centre, excessive and I expect there is quite a bit of competition between them.

I can shed a little light on the proliferation of Greggs in town centres.

The highest concentrations are in the north. Where there are high concentrations of poor people.

Bwahahhahahahahahahhahahahhahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Theres one in SW1V 3EN which is within 2 miles east of SW3

Then theres one in SW5 9RD which is within 2 miles west of SW3

So even if theres not one in SW3, theres plenty within a short distance.

I suspect in those two examples one of the HMV stores is an ex-Zavvi, and one of the Game's is an ex-Electronics Boutique.
Yep in Lakeside originally it was one GAME and one EB, but since converting the EB store to GAME they have also moved it to a larger unit so fully intentional to have two stores.

all gregs stuff tastes the same... the sausage rolls taste the same s the chicken bake which tastes the same and pretty much any meat product they sell. The fudge donut is alright though.

its a secret government fitness programme for the public. One store purposely runs out of stock and tells you to go the other side of the high-street and check if its in stock, it then repeats. The government can be ******** at times.

Regarding the comments about Greggs I have to agree, usually more stores are found in the lower income/class areas. I used to work in Lewisham (South London), it's a small town centre yet it has three Greggs., but on the otherhand it doesn't have a Pret or Costa Coffee.

The nearest Pret to Lewisham is Canary Wharf where there are 7 of the damm things.

It's not going to capture the SW3 market - there's a Caviar-to-go en route.

To attempt to argue that there aren't more Gregg's bakeries in poorer areas is completely ridiculous. They are a low-price bakery - why would they not choose to put more stores in poorer areas, and fewer stores in richer areas? It would be a sensible business decision!

I think we are comparing oranges and apples here....

Greggs is a food shop, it sells consumable goods which will get eaten by people within it's catchment area or it simply wouldn't exist. Same could be said about Starbucks/Costa/EAT/Pret etc in London, they are all within a few yards of each other.

Stores selling games and entertainment are different though.

With Game, who let's face it are the only company on the high-street specifically selling games they are as others have pointed out in a position where they bought out other companies. Where I grew up, I had a summer job in a Game in Hemel Hempstead some 11 years ago now, there was at one stage a Game, EB and Gamestation within yards of each other. They eventually rebranded the EB to Game before getting rid of it a few years later.

I think though that this year will see a lot of duplicate shops disappearing, what with changes in spending habits, the VAT rise and more people buying online. HMV has already announced it's not doing well and that they are actually closing their second Oxford Street store... that's pretty major when you think that it's Europe's busiest shopping high-street. So I'd imagine we will see many shops going this coming year.
