Foghorns river severn

if you're about to be flooded in the middle of the night, and have signed up to it, the environment agency will email you. So glad I live about 300 feet above the nearest river..

Yeah because people are checking their AOL e-mails at 3am in the morning

Your more likely to be floating in a sesspit of water when you wake up before you get around to checking your e-mails.

Funny you should say that, that was one of the arguements against the new systems. But seems that the councils of the east coast, along with the environment agencies and the police, decided otherwise..

Foghorn? Could you more specific?

You usually find them on large Estuaries or rivers which regularly have large boats travelling through, on par with lighthouses really and they siren when there is fog and poor visibility to warn ships/boats.

They sound every 20-30 seconds, even through the night and are loud.

Because the pilots/captains don't have eyes to see the fog themselves?

I dont think its the fog they are trying to avoid. :p

If its foggy, they might not be able to see lighthouses until the last minute when its too late to turn

You're probably right, seems most places phased out siren based flood warnings, because they felt they "scared" people, instead now, if you're about to be flooded in the middle of the night, and have signed up to it, the environment agency will email you. So glad I live about 300 feet above the nearest river..

Our flood warnings are automated messages from the Environment Agency over the phone describing how serious the risk is and what to do. That is not all they do though.

In 2005 I had fallen asleep on my sofa and awoke early in the morning as the phone was ringing, I thought "who the **** phones at this time of the morning the inconsiderate *****"

when I picked it up it said something like "this is an important message from the Environment Agency, flooding is imminent"

I went over and looked out of my window and sure enough my street was now part of the local river, it had it's own current and everything :D

There was also staff from the Environment Ageny banging the crap out of everyones doors and shouting through letter boxes, they were alomst military like lol.

Luckily for us the water stopped rising just below the top of my doorstep although many others weren't so fortunate
