Discuss the new MSI GT 680 - OcUK Exclusive Laptop

CPU -i5 (New Sandy Bridge)
Motherboard/Chipset - P67
RAM - 8GB
GFX - 5870m is a better and cheaper card. So unless you wait for the next architectuere I would stick with the 5870m ( or for 17inch how about a nice xfire board )
Boot HDD - Intel 120GB SSD ( Not worth it. Go with a good 64gb )
Storage HDD - 500GB 5400rpm HDD ( Really ? 7200 please )
Screen - 15.6" True HD LED
Speaker - Dolby ( SRS please just like before )
Blu-Ray - Yes or No? ( No not worth it. Read through some other laptop website, you will find people actuly remove their drive anyway. )

Certainly something I'd consider as a replacement laptop but only as long as it doesn't look like something you'd find in Toys R Us - unlike most gaming laptops these days :(

Seems like an immense spec let down by the graphics, however for all I know this is as good as laptops get right now.

I don't encode or anything, I only have a high end rig for gaming and an i7 seems a waste when coupled with a 460 imo.

The Asus G73 is a 17.3" with the same specs, imported for less...

Change the drive for a 7200, change to a 5870 and lower the price and you have a winner!

id be interested for my dad
couple of ideas, the design of the gaming laptop isnt too bad, just swap the red plastic and stuff for black, similer shade to rest of case

non gloss screen aswell please

1680x1050 or above screen, preferably full hd. how well does w7 work with large text?. thats the downside of a small high res screen, tiny text :x

would prefer a bluray drive, that can write dvds aswell

single hybrid hd perhaps?

Agreed. The graphics are far too weak for something that expensive IMO. The processor is also too powerful by comparison and would be wasted in most games as the GPU would be the bottleneck.

Personally I'd sacrifice a bit of processor speed (i5 maybe) and spend more on the graphics.

should have 1680x1050 resolution and a sufficient gpu to run the latest games on it.

ram and cpu will be overkill whatever you choose.

I just think battery will be the issue - you'll end up having to keep the laptop plugged in, so it might as well be a desktop.

It always surprises me when people say this. Do you take a desktop from room to room? Take it on holidays with you? A laptop may not always have great battery life, but its still 100x more portable than a desktop, as long as you have the power brick you can take it anywhere.

That's all well and good - if you want to go on a holiday and play the same games you could play at home :P

Or as part of your job you end up commuting around the country living in hotels and you want to play a game! Working away all the time is no holiday.

RAM 6GB (I think 8GB is way too much, I'd be happy with just 4, I think people who want to run VM or similar can upgrade it themselves and it would keep costs down)
GPU 5870 (Cheaper, consumes less power and it's better in most games)
HDD (in my opinion a 320gb or 500gb 7200rpm would be enough, the intel SSDs get bad reviews compared to others, and I don't think SSDS are that mainstream yet and are very expensive, to keep costs down, it should be something optional that one can buy and upgrade themselves)
Screen: 15.6in 1680x1050, 17.3in 1920x1080 (I think this is personal preference personally, although I wouldn't like to see a full hd 15.6in screen)
I'm not a fan of blu ray drive on laptops (or optical media in general) but if the cost isn't a lot then I guess it would be worth it.

Like the other laptops, I think costs could be kept low since I believe most of your customer base prefers to customise and upgrade their laptops themselves anyway

Edit: Oh 1 thing you should definitely improve over the current MSIs is the picture quality of the screens.

2 words: London commute :(

There's a lorra lorra reasons people can be away from home... business trips, commutes, or simply the freedom to take the laptop into different rooms of the house or around to a mates for some gaming. The only bad thing in my book is that laptop graphics haven't yet caught up with processing speeds.

another thing you could mention is students, young people or just people perhaps living in temporary rented accomodations which don't have the physical space to have a desktop + desk + PC monitor around, or if they move a lot due to work or financial conditions it's a hassle to carry around. A bin bag of clothes and laptop bag is easier :D

I'm looking to buy a laptop atm, won't be a gaming one thou since I don't have the time to play videogames and I rather have a GT 330/425 and a laptop that looks the business then a 5850 or 70 and a laptop that looks like those kiddy ones my mum used to buy me in Toys R US :D

I wish I knew when sandybridge might be coming to laptops thou!

Yeah, what is it with the gaming laptops looking like junk, it's really annoying. Been looking at one myself for when i go abroad and they all look like a seriously bad done up chav saxo!
