HTC Desire HD (Ace)

Hi All

My friend is looking at buying a Desire or Desire HD sim free. Is it worth spending £100 pounds more on the HD.
Most definitely. More app memory (like 10x as much), faster, GPU is 2x more poweful, bigger screen, thinner (by a tiny amount) and 4 point multitouch instead 2 point which doesn't even work correctly.

Desire is a good phone, but Desire HD is an excellent phone.

You sound like a person who owns a Desire HD? I've had a hankering for a Desire for ages now. When you say the Desire HD has a bigger screen isn't the same resolution as the Desire? So over a larger area it wouldn't look as good?

Not trying to wind you up, just interested in determining whether the Desire is still the phone for me or if I should get Desire HD or perhaps even wait! :p

The HD *is* rather large, but it's vastly more powerful. Best bet is go into a shop and handle one. It's borderline too large for a lot of people, I'd imagine. The screen is lovely.

Think I do need to go window shopping.

My problem is that I think the Desire looks much nicer than the Desire HD so the Desire HD needs to be a lot more powerful and faster to overcome my shortcomings about its aesthetics. :p

I'm definitely not going for the Samsung Galaxy S. I had a look at that with a mate in Leeds over the summer and I decided it was too iPhone-esque. Currently with an HTC Magic so its going to be HTC again with either the Desire or Desire HD. I am currently 99% in favour of getting a Desire but then when I see posts in this thread saying that the Desire is good but Desire HD is just much better then I get a bit worried that I might do the wrong thing.

I read one review about the Desire HD which said it was very heavy, perhaps too heavy the reviewer thought. Or is it not noticeable, or if it is, worth it?

For me, as a regular adult male and not a 5 year old kid or a girl, the weight of the HD is not an issue. It's big so obviously it's relatively heavy but, not so as you pick it up and go "woah" or anything. It's perfectly acceptable.

Struggling to see how the Desire can trump the HD aesthetically, though. It has that nasty asymmetrical button arrangement at the bottom, whereas the HD is just sleek with some touchscreen icons.

The Desire HD is no more trouble to use and handle than the iPhone 4 or the original Desire.

It isn't a great deal larger and you gain a considerable amount of screen size with it among many other things. It isn't honestly a problem, dont worry about it.

OK. Cheers. :) I'm also a regular adult male. Well I say regular. :p

That's what I like about the Desire! Does the Desire HD not have a direct replacement for the Desire's optical trackpad? Or is the Desire HD controlled on screen apart from the touch sensitive buttons at the bottom?

Cheers. I've just had a look at some hi-res pics of both phones and I'm starting to have fewer problems with the Desire HD. I'm planning on going to Milton Keynes shopping centre sometime next month so I'll pop into a mobile phone shop and try the two phones out then. :)

Interface wise the HD has a power button on the top edge, volume rocker on the left edge, and the touch screen. No need for a daft optical thing, the screen's amazing. The four "buttons" at the bottom are part of the main touch screen slab, but are physical icons with lights behind them, they don't change or anything. With the structure of the thing the screen takes up the vast majority of the visible facia, which helps make it look so sleek and kinky. Compared to say, the Galaxy S, or the Desire, which both have more non-screen space by far, it just oozes quality and high-end-ness, which is an actual word.

Oh and a word on the power button: it's placed on such a perfect angle on the rounded edge that you can hold the phone with 0% risk of accidentally tapping it, but if you need to tap it can 100% always get to it easily. It's a genius-ly precise bit of ergonomic design.

Hmm I must admit you're helping me move towards the HD now. :) Especially as it does seem more technically advanced inside. Might check out the rooting scene for the HD and see what that's like. :)

I actually miss having a track ball/pad, does make it easier to move 1 character across when typing texts/emails etc.

Other things to think about are Sense has a few very nice tweaks/additional features on the HD. The extra screen space is very welcome when browsing the internet (makers it much easier and pleasant) even though the resolution is the same.

The keyboard does have 4-way arrows which are handy for this kind of thing.

Just wanted to second this. Possibly the desire can do it too or be upgraded to, but the text reflow on this hd is just amazing. Zoom in on any text on a web page so the font's a comfortable size and it'll alter the paragraph width automatically to fit the width of the display, it's a genius system.

I just wrote this post on it. It was a pretty painless process, really.

There isn't really one at the moment. There was a temp root which stopped working after the last OTA update a few days ago but I'm not sure what's going on at XDA regarding a perm root. But after 3 months of having one, screenshots aside, I can honestly say I don't miss rooting/using custom ROMs at all.

Yes there is, massive amounts of home brew builds on the XDA forums, some are overclocked too.

Although I agree, I have not felt the need to root mine either. It is so smooth with stock I don't see the need for any optimisations.

Only thing tempting me is Android 2.3 - which as far as I can tell won't add much and I really do like Sense.
