Hi , my missus wants me to buy a new slim and kinect, now im thinking i may get a 4gb slim as i already have a 120gb HDD on my other xbox i could transfer to it
is it simply a case of removing the HD from its plastic case and putting it in the slim ?

also,i recently swapped my old launch day console for my mates hdmi console, obviously we kept our own hard drives and just swapped consoles , i ran the licence migration set up at xbox.com to transfer my COD map packs and other bits to the new console when id finished that it said i couldnt migrate for like another 12 months, so now i wont be able to transfer my map packs to a new slim ?

ive heard you can fit it in there, but you need to pack it out with something or its loose and could damage the connections, your choice

just dont go moving the machine while its inside, i saw a write up by someone who put an old hdd in their new slim, think they used polystyrene or something, but warned about the connection being fragile because of this

good point

with regard to the 4gb model,is that inbuilt flash memory ? so if i added a 120gb id have that PLUS the 4gb total storage ? or is it a 4gb HDD inside the console ?

i picked up a 4gig slim for 145 with a free game, the other day and i have fitted my old 120gig hdd and its running fine
i packed it out to help support it
also its a bit of a false advertising as its only 3gig not 4

not really false advertising though is it, everybody knows that a hdd rated capacity is not its actual capacity, the 250 gb version is only something like 227 in actual fact

it is really as you don't buy it unformatted
they should really stop it, it was the same years ago with TV and monitors when they would say 26in but at least 1in of that was hidden behind the bezel, they were made to say the real size in the end

A 250GB hard drive is really something like 233GB of actual space according to the Xbox 360. This isn't anything to do with formatted or unformatted capacity, but rather because hard drive manufacturers define 1 Megabyte as 1000 Kilobytes whereas Microsoft define 1 Megabyte as 1024 Kilobytes. Both definitions are technically correct, they're just different interpretations.

On top of that, 4GB of space is reserved for cache and game updates so you end up with 229GB 'usable' on a 250GB HD.

I'm not sure what the exact available capacity is on a 4GB 360 but again due to the 1000/1024 byte thing you're going to be seeing something like 3.8GB of usable space but with a chunk reserved for system updates etc - probably leaving you with around 3GB for your game saves and downloads.

exactly, hdd's are the same size formatted or unformatted, didnt you never notice how your 750gb pc hdd is only actually 694gb or something, its just hdd ratings
