They weren't identical no, one was larger and more dominant than the other, but they were brothers so they did look similar :)

They are the best cats that ever lived :)

I will take it outside and it will see that I'm with it and it 'should' work
Don't you need a wooden door for a cat flap or?

I found mine didn't like being taken outside or held outside as it couldn't be in control and feel able to run away home if it needed.

Nope you can put them in any door. PVC doors are handy as you can just replace the bottom panel if you are selling up or anything.

Thanks, Good to know that :)

I don't mean take it and stand there, I mean as it take it outside to get used to it and then I will let it go outside on it's own

This thread is usedless without more KITTEN PHOTOS!

And lo i shall deliver. Ophelia, Yoda & Spock

These were from when they were 5 weeks and 9 weeks old. They are now 7 months.

As for the indoors outdoors argument, ours stay indoors. Our road isn't particularly busy but the side of our house is a busy little access to the garages round the back and in addition everyone within 3 miles of here comes and walks down the side of our place to walk their dogs (massive fields out the back). As a result the cats would be at risk if we just let them out willy nilly.

Regardless they are more than content indoors and indoor cats on average live longer than outdoor cats.

Yoda got outside by accident one day and I didn't notice for about 4 hours. When I eventually found him he was sitting under my car petrified. None of them have shown any desire to get out since.

./Want the ginger cat :D Looks cool :P

How do your Cat's find living inside?

The ginger one does tend to be most peoples favorite, probably the most playful of the three and has very fluffy soft fur. The black one is more timid and have very sleek fur whle the white/grey one is just a stone cold killer. He'll watch the other two playing with something and not move until its near him once that happens it's his. He also had the bigger stones of the two boys.

Both the wife and I grew up with cats and have both seen our share of accidents and tears both caused by living outside and in. We took our decision based on everything we knew before we got them and on the way they behave now.

They are fine indoors in all honesty. I mean they don't sit and tell me that they don't want to go outside cos its evil and wet, but they also don't express any behaviour which suggests they do want to go out either.

I made a 4ft scratching post in the hall which they use all the time which is saving the furniture (3" round post covered in 8mm sisal rope) and in the new year I'll be adding another somewhere taller.

They are very affectionate cats and will all sit on or immediately next to me or the wife whenever they can. They have a few toys that continue to drive them crazy even after having them for 4 months and they get regular attention. They are also very friendly with the myriad of visitors we have over and on xmas day when we had 7 people join us for dinner they loved all the fussing.

The indoors outdoors argument is not too dissimilar to the wet/dry food argument. Vets continue to tell owners that dry is best but a lot of owners prefer wet for a plethora of reasons. Many like to let the cats out in a large run much like a rabbit would have, I'm not sure how that is any better than just staying indoors but each to their own. Some like TheCrow really don't like the idea of cats being kept indoor, some others hate the idea of them going outside.

As TheCrow said earlier, cats are not going to run right out the door and get run over. They apparently have an intellect approximate to a 3 year old child. However, they are still vulnerable, they are still fragile and so that decision is only the owners to make. If you don't feel comfortable with your cat going outside then don't let it. Don't make that decision on anyone elses insistence. If anything happened while the cat was outside then you would forever wish you had listened to yourself instead of someone else.

At the end of the day, if a cat appears affectionate, healthy, loving and happy, whether it is kept indoors or out doesn't come into it for me.

I might have to steel your Ginger Cat :D

I think I would feel safer knowing that my Cat was inside and not outside, fair enough they're not stupid but I would always worry if it was to go out. I'm only worried because my cousins cat got ran over :( (She's only 7) and I don't want the same thing to happen to me.

I priced up some stuff for it, it came to around £100 which seems expensive but there was a lot of stuff there, just hope now it's the new year I can find one that everyone likes :D

I understand where TheCrow is coming from but I wouldn't feel safe knowing that it's a busy road and my Cat was out there

what stuff are you talking about?

As long as you have food and litter and a couple of toys you shouldn't need much more.

Our cats have a wet food called Bozita (no fillers like rice, 50% chicken etc etc) and a dry food called Porta 21 Feline Finest Sensible which is also grain free.

As for litter we use Chick Crumbs, food usually given to baby chickens. Its about £7-9 per 20kb bag and that will last us a month. It's very absorbent and makes wee form into 2"+ balls so its easy to scoop out. You don't replace the whole tray every few days, you just scoop out the bad stuff and top it up.

To feed our three costs us about £90 for 6 weeks and litter comes to about £9 a month.

However, people like the Cats Protection (where we got ours) don't often like giving you kittens if they are going to be alone.

Some more of Spock :)

I've had my cat for about 18 months now maybe longer O.o

He's and indoor cat and he's perfectly content with it (live in a pretty rough area + busy roads etc). I do let him outside in my very small back garden or my parents back yard 1 a fortnight or so which he enjoys exploring and doesn't try to escape but make sure you keep and eye on your cat :p

I had him when he was 5 weeks old or if not younger and he wasn't ready to leave his mother I don't think he constantly kept trying to suckle and dry food was making him ill. Changing his good and buying him softer food sorted him out, hes now happy enough trying to steal my takeaway ¬.¬

My cat has been perfectly fine in doors but I don't think every cat is the same as some like their space or would rather not be in much human contact :p But mine likes attention even if its not physically stroking him, he just likes to follow me about making sure I know where he is.

1st Day I had him

Some handy info for you then :)
  • Cat Bed - We had one which got used for the first month or so but now they all just sleep wherever they like. usually on us or on the sofa. I wouldn't spend too much here.
  • Cat post - When cats scratch furiture its often because they dont have an adequate place to do so. An adequate post for a cat is taller than the cat is long as it allows them to stretch at the same time. If you watch a cat scratching a tree they will usually lower themselves right down and arch their back to stretch as much as possible. Make sure that the post/platform has an adequately long post for them do this on. Also if the post moves while they try to use it they'll not go near it. They need it to feel secure and stable before they'll use it. Ours is secured to the wall as it was home made.
  • Food - As I said before, there are many arguments on various forums over dry or wet food. Vets continue to push dry but since cats aren't natural drinkers there have been links to urinary problems in later life becuase they didn't get enough moisture. We feed half and half and always have water down if they want it. Also consider the contents of the food you are buying. Unlike yourself, cats are dependant on protein for most of their diet. Their bodies physically struggle to process anything else. Many supermarket foods which people think are fine (felix, whiskers, go cat etc) are full of things like rice and cereals. Manufacturers use this to fill out the food and keep it cheap. Ultimately the cat just poops it right out again and often not in nice firm lumps but more wet watery mess. Also the smell of cat waste is often awful when being fed on foods with a large chunk of carbs in.

The best bet at first will be to buy whatever they have been raised on thus far. Moving home is very stressful and it'll be best for the animal if its food isn't also changed at the same time. Should you wish to start changing the food NEVER do it in one go. I've not met a cat yet that didn't get guts ache after being swapped straight from one food to another. Mix them up over the course of a week gradually adding more of the new food.

  • Toys - our three have worked through a few toys and lost interest in many, but the one that is still entertaining them and still not ripped to shreds it this leather tassle thing . All i have to do is touch the handle for this and all three are ready to play and its very handy when I'm trying to distract them all!

Hope some of that is useful. I'm at work on nights and its dead quiet hence all the essay replies

Thanks for the tips, What food do you recommend me to purchase? or do you advise to try and purchase what they are already eating?

I think with the toys I will only buy a couple to start with and then buy a new one each month or something for a new change.

I think it will enjoy being inside (I hope) and then being let out now and then for a roam.
