Kittens

Sorry to thread jack a bit, but do cats need injections even if they are going to be home cats?

We got ours free from a neighbour (saved the poor fellow from being drowned) so no injections or anything. I know it is bad but to be honest I forgot to check if he needed any :(

Here's a picture of mine (sorry about my ugly mug in it I don't have any of him on his own). He is doing his impression of a scurf/patriot. He loves being on my shoulders for some reason

He's about 7 months old. They grow really quick

Black cats are the best :).

I think you should inject all cats but I never did mine and he has been fine. I think its more for the safety of kittens as they are much more prone to diseases and such. Also with mine being a house cat he's less open to the spread of cat germs but it is still possible from flies and such getting into the house :)

Just as well they dont seem aggressive, it could eat you alive. Bet its got fangs like daggers

Reminds me of a liger, they are a natural breed occuring some country ?

Are you talking about the Maine Coons? If so yes apparently they are bred from a large forest cat found in America. From the wiki page: "It is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, specifically native to the state of Maine, where it is the official State Cat."

Official state cat :D :p

Liger = male lion + female tiger. Same genus, different species. Think they are either infertile or are extremely difficult to breed since they're hybird creatures. Big mule cat sort of thing.

Phoned up a local ish animal shelter to see if they had any Kittens and they have four, 3 tortoise shell and 1 black but it opens on wednesday between 12 - 2 and I'm at college then :/

Update: Went out and got some stuff for the Kitten today :D Got a bed, Kitten litter tray, Bag of litter, Bowls, Few toys and a Collar :)

Some other tips as you are going ahead and buying stuff :)

Litter tray, these are just challenges to the cats to see how much of the litter they can get outside the tray. I found that the Ikea litter tray (though cant find it on there site any more) was good as it was nice and deep as well as curved top helping to keep things inside. Ikea litter tray Also while ours was going indoors it stinks! so unless you are toilet training it (very easy to do, we used Litter Quiter) it might be worth looking into the litter trays that are covered like these.

Collar is useful for letting people know that it has an owner (if it escapes to freedom :p) along with a tags. But it is really worth getting it micro-chipped as they can lose the collars very easy (better they loose/safety clip to come of then them hanging themselves), if you pay the slightly higher membership price then you can update your details/contact numbers as often as you wish free of charge.

I also see you haven't got a scratching post yet. It will save a lot of furniture if you get one as they will pick the next best thing for the job if you don't have a dedicated one.

Good luck with getting your kitty. :D

Thanks for the reply :D

We didn't want to get an expensive covered litter tray to start off with as we wanted to let it know where to do it first and then maybe upgrade to a covered one, the tray will be cleaned at least twice a week.

The Collar we got has a nice jingly bell on it aha so you can hear it when it's coming :D

We were looking at them in the shop but thought we'd have a look on the net to see the prices on there :)

Thanks :D Pictures will be up as soon as we get him / her

Edit: @swanseajack sorry to hear that, the kittens look cool :D apart from the last one's eye looks quite scary aha :p

I recommend Catsan Cat Litter as cat feces and urine stinks to high heaven.

We tried CatSan but went on to stay with Chick Crumbs. Its the same as Worlds best (we tried both), is very cheap (£8 a month for us with 3 cats), stops the smell, and does its urine clumping thing which makes cleaning out easy.

Anyone got any tips on feeding patterns for Kittens? Because I was in the pet shop today and watching this video that was playing about Kittens and it says that they have small stomach's so you have to feed them around 4 - 6 times a day but in small portions and then reduce it when they get older

Never heard of that stuff before, I'll give it a try thanks Todge.

Worlds Best is the one most pet stores sell but its like £20 for 10kg. Chick Crumb is i swear as close to identical as its going to get, works just as well and is £8 for 20kg. just need to find a retailer near you. We get ours from a place called Scats Country Stores. If you are unsure where to find some, try and find someone selling chickens and ask them!

Sounds about right. I wouldn't say any particular pattern and obviously if you have to work then you have to work.

When we got ours was actually off for a week so it was quite handy to bed them in. After that I was working 07:00 - 19:00 while the wife was doing 08:30 - 17:00. That meant that i could feed them when i got up at 05:30. She would feed them again at about 07:30 and once they ate it all put a little more down while we were out. Then She'd feed when she got home, then again when i got home and then again when we went to bed.

They really do only eat a little at first but they'll be fine as long as they get plenty overall.

Thanks for the info :)

I will probably feed it when I get up (Around 7ish) and then get my Mum to feed it around 10 ish (she works nights and goes to bed around then) then I will feed them when I get home from college and then before I go to bed so between 4 -5 meals it will get :)

That'll be fine :) if you have any scales it might also be an idea to make sure you are putting enough down. just go by whatever the packet says. Although they only eat a little at a time it's all going into growing bigger so you'll see them grow quite fast.
