Hiya! :)
Id really appreciate any help you can give me. I have read many stickys/guides etc on how to overclock an i7 to 4Ghz but i am still cant get my head around it. I have overclocked an AM3 before (955 from 3.2 to 3.8) and thought i could do the same with an i7..but apparently not.
This is my spec :)
CPU: i7 950 (h50 cpu cooler)
Mobo: p6x58d-e
RAM: OCZ 4Gb 1333Mhz Gold (duel channel)
GPU: 5870
PSU: XFX 850W

What ever i do i just get BSOD after about 15mins of prime95. I have tried many combinations 175BCLK*23 200*20 etc and nothing seems to work. I have even upped the CPU voltage to 1.35 but nothing seems to work. Where i am a bit hazy in my OC knowledge is the way the ram overclock with the cpu. My ram runs at 1333 (stock) so should i be aiming to keep it at 1333 (or as near as possible)
At the moment it can end up around 16000 or even higher. Also the amount of settings you can change. Pll, QPI etc It just goes over my head a little.
I have even tried some ‘template’ settings but I’m not sure what to twiddle with tbh to get it to work. I have seen SO many on these boards say how easy it was to get to 4Ghz without ever trying. Is there something wrong with the chip or board? ><
Seriously can anyone give ANY advice.

Also as a side note the stock temps dont seem much lower than overclocked temps.. is that a good or bad sign?

P.s i wasn’t joking about the WoW gold lol if you help me get a stable 4Ghz 10,000G is yours on hellscream server ;) ..or 3,000G on eonar.

scroll down for bio pics:) ty for your help

Ok., just set it up so i have 4ghz and my ram is running under 1333mhz. temps got upto 88c (think it was a small spike) but mainly sat around 85. This is a bit high (i feel) for a h50 -_- but beggers cant be choosers.

VOltage was around 1.3250 :( I may try kick the ram up a tiny bit (if i can work out how lol) and lowering the voltage a little later.

Those temps really are on the limit, I wouldn't be running at that temp TBH.

Best thing to do is to take pics of the BIOS screen with all your settings, let us know what BIOS you're running etc.

I don't have any experience myself with clocking this CPU but with further info I bet someone will be able to help :)

:( im not too keen tbh on the temps tbh, i reseated it earlier and temps didnt change -_- i may retry the articsilver rather than my mx-3.

Ill take a picture later of the bios etc later and upload it with a list of my specs and stuff :) cheers!

Try going 200 x 20, memory should be 1200 with that so closer to spec, but still under.

Leave Qpi as it is, set vcore to 1.3v, see if its stable with that, if not then up the vcore slightly until it is. May just be that u have a cpu that needs abit more vcore for 4ghz.

But 85c fully loaded is'nt to bad, iv seen far worse lol, and if you rarely are 100% loaded its nothing to worry about, game temps will never ever reach that.

ty:) i ran it at that for 45mins seemed okay (going to leave it on tonight see how it goes) temps were getting up to 85C again. The thing im worried about is this room was quite cold. In the summer it gets VERY hot in here. -_- from what ive seen most ppl are getting 65-70C max with h50. dont know what ive done/doing wrong.
My case is antec 1200 so its a well vented case with a lot of strong fans.

Try this:

200x20

Vcore 1.275
Pll 1.88
QPI 1.275
Uncore3200

I know the volts are a lot lower than what people are telling you, so if it's unstable, try upping vcore and qpi to 1.3.

Also, OCZ gold is apparently quite dodgy ram. Why are you running dual channel on a chip that uses triple channel and a mobo that uses triple channel? That might be where your problems lie.

Does it BSOD on Prime small FFT or large FFT? I think that large indicates problems with mem settings, small indicates problems with cpu/mobo settings

Have u got 1 or 2 fans on the H50?

Oh and most with H50's even with 2 fans will never ever get as low as 65c on 100% load trust me.

Im on custom water so leaps ahead, and my temps are 55-65c max, dependent on ambient at the time.

But 85c is fine, it will never reach that whilst gaming, ever..

Edit:
@Cent
I was gonna get him to try that after it the 1.3v stuff was stable lol.

Im not too sure :( ill check next time it bsod. :( i couldnt afford the triple ram just the mobo and processor lol I may be buying some triple in the next 2-3 weeks. Maybe that will help a little :(

I had a lot of trouble finding the uncore on my bios but when i did it didnt have a 3200 setting. :/

I have a two fan (push and pull) exhaust set up. AH.. guess i shouldnt beleave everything i read on the net then lol ><

Thanks very much to both of you for your help i really appricate it :D ill let u know back tonight/tomorrow of how tho settings went :)

Oh sorry mate. Uncore is UCLK, and I thought that you were using 1600mhz ram so I thought it would be 3200. UCLK should be double Ram frequency. So presumably if you keep stock ram clocks it should be 2666 :)

Or just set it to auto to save the hassle lol..

With using 200 base clock, the memory if chosing the lowest setting will be 1200, so the Uclk would be 2400.

JUst tryed the above settings..and in Bios its saying 4ghz but in windows its reading it as 2.66Ghz :(

thats with vcore 1.3
200*20
PLL1.88
QPI 1.275
Ucore 2404. :(]

Altho CPUID is reading it at 3.998 (then flicking upto 4Ghz then back again)

What do you mean it's shown as 2.6 in windows?
In CPU-Z, if it shows 4ghz, it's probably 4ghz :)

:( well the settings crashed so i upped the vcore voltage to 1.3125 and it crashed after about 3-4 hours :( Im guessing i just keep upping the vcore untill it becomes stable?

P.s This is what i meant :P

You would have to re-run WEI, for it to show up there as 4ghz, but don't worry its not important, aslong as cpu-z reads 4ghz, then its at 4ghz.
