Hi i have noticed under system that i get 6.0 Gig ram 4.0 Gig usable, does this mean i have a dead stick ?

32 bit windows?

try taking out and then reinserting the modules, or wait a while and it may come back as that happened to me

Hi , downed the overclock and still the same , its 64bit system , i will take out the modules one by one and see if i can id the offending stick/slot if there is one

Can you check what it reads under 'physical memory' on the performance tab of task manager?

Does your MB have a memory remap setting in the bios?

Under task Manager it says 4 gig and i dont think i have any remaping in bios , i will check, but cant say i have ever noticed it

Hi CPU-Z says 6.0 gig , 2.0 gig in slot 1,3&5 so strange , i will try the reseating tomorrow , Happy New Year btw

You might have a weak stick of ram.
I'v been having the same problem when I upgraded to 12gb of ram, sending the new 6gb of ram back, received a new set of 12gb (18gb total) and all works fine now.

I have narrowed it down to slot 1 , which ever stick i put there it wont read it as usable , i removed the cpu and the socket looks ok , so i guess its either my motherboard or cpu but which one i dont know :(

any idea what the warranty period is on Gigabyte Motherboards, i hope its at least 2 years

Just looked at your sig, looks like it's the exact same ram my mobo was having problems with...

If cpuZ picks up all the memory then its a OS REMAPPING ISSUE.

try this method.

START/RUN/ type msconfig then press enter.

Boot tab / Advanced Options
Untick the Maximum Memory box and apply changes and reboot and all your memory will be remapped ;)

Hi , tryed the remap in msconfig and it was already unticked :(

going to try reseating the cpu cooler again later, will let you know, thanks for the help though, any more ideas let me know

It's a known issue with Gigabyte X58 boards, only way I've been able to get round it is to reset my BIOS to the defaults and then reloading my overclocked settings from the backup.

Hi , i loaded "fail safe defaults" and just changed to raid so it would boot , but still the same im affraid

What speed are you trying to run the memory at? I notice you have 1866mhz memory but the i7 950 only officially supports 1066mhz, 1600mhz should be doable but at anything approaching 1866mhz your CPU's memory controller will probably keel over.

Hi , i have defaults at the moment which as you say is 1066, but still the same , also tried upgrading the bios to beta version 13J which i couldnt get it to boot at all , bios pages for this completely changed, anyway i then downgraded to F11 from the original F12, still the same "6.0 gig installed and 4.0 gig useable".

When i tested yesterday it was definitely any stick in slot1 that was the unusable stick. I had this with the early dominator chips, the "Elpida" i think they were called, were falling over but i got this down to an individual stick. Anyway Corsair refunded me and these are the replacement sticks i have run with for the last 12 Months or more.
Does it sound to you like the Mobo
