What used to be a UK
Only had one and so I'll start:

Some guys had shifted the usual bench from the Smith and decdided to use a sit-up bench which ment placing the original bench alongside the others. When they had finnished I decided I needed the original back and made my way to get it. Only there were tons of people congregating in large groups. off i went weaving in and out of them only to brush past some youth doing a light military press muttering under his breath. Not knowing whether he was ok I walked over to him and asked him if he was ok. I was then met by a tirade of abuse and comments like: "I'm not being funny mate but will you not wheel this bench around/past me when I'm lifting this..." I tried to explain that the bench belonged under the Smith and that I was only trying to put it back because so dimwit had moved it and i needed to use it. I even tried to explain to him that i wasn't after an argument and but tried to apologise if I had put him off. Anyway the argument got that bad that theguy started again: "I'm not trying to be funny Mate???????....but will you get out of my ****ing face" it got that bad we had to be split up by other gym members.sigh! So anybody else have any similar tales? Gym attitude lol

Grab the bench and ignore him, not worth the hassle. Just use the red rage on your next few sets :)

The fact he didn't have to stop his set shows you weren't that close anyway.

Have had 2 people walk past me during my side laterals. I hit them both. (with the DB's mid set, i didn't stop to punch them :p)

Generally if somebody is lifting and I need something that might interupt their set I'll wait till they've finished. Though if I don't think it'll disturb them greatly I'll nip in and pinch it making it obvious I'm aware they are lifting.

Having people walk right infront of you and the bar when you're setting up for a deadlift is frustrating too.

There's groups of lads back at uni that I can tell dislike me and I dislike them but I never had any confrontations.

Generally if you don't stand in a stupid place blocking access to equipment then there shouldn't ever really be any problems. Providing the bar was empty when I found it I'll leave it empty too. Or at the very least strip it off to 60KG and leave the collars on the hooks below the bar. If I find DB's just tossed arround then I'll roll them out my way. Though if I need them I'll use them and put them back on the rack. It's your responsibility to put them back and also the gym staffs duty to keep the place safe.

This sort of stuff annoys me more than confrontations.

I've never had any issues as like Freefaller said I know most of the regulars so we all get on

However I do sometimes get the rage when new guys come in, keep about 5 different weights of dumbbells to themselves, or sit there texting away for 5 minutes in between sets. Nothing makes me more angry, and I'll quite often say "Are you finished with that?" knowing they haven't, just to remind them to get on with it

The other one is guys who come in and teach their mates to use really bad form or do stuff that is actually quite dangerous, both to themselves and others

Some of us texts in between sets as a resting period :P I just get on with my own thing let others get on with their's they don't bother me. If they get in my way I don't stop and if my weight hits them so be it lol. They'll learn to get out the way nexttime takes classical conditioning as some of these guys are pretty dim so can only learn the same way as a dog. I would have just muttered sorry to the lad and carried on moving the bench rather than have a conversation and give him the potential to be a ****.

I don't mind a text in between sets, as you need to rest a bit, it's when people text their entire phonebook or write an essay and spend ages doing so, so a 3 set exercise ends up taking 10 minutes

Never had any trouble in a gym in nearly 15 years.

FF doesn't get any trouble because a) he's the biggest guy in there or b) he's too busy chatting up the pretty girls :D

c) and he is the one Frenchy who won't surrender, and they know it!

*ducks for cover behind ^Tank^*

No problems myself, but my brother and his mate have sometimes had some bloke smaller than them follow them around trying to join in and tell them how to do it. Don't think he has got a hang of how to tell this guy to **** off in nice terms.

Younger (/bigger than me) brother might be strong but his way with words has a long way to come.

I've never had or seen any trouble in my gym. I tend to go outside peak hours to avoid the crowds and the people that also go at my times are a decent bunch.

Saying that, there's one ginger guy who once flipped out and started swearing at a bench!

Yeah hindsight ;) It bloody annoyed me because I had to dodge in and out of the crowds with this bench somebody had put in the wrong place and then somehow shift around the side of the geezer in question doing a nancy military press with a 30k barbell weight. I get on with 99% of the guys in the gym no problems at all but this guy I didn't recognize at all. If truth be told if I'd have wacked him I'd have split him in two but I am not an aggressive sort of guy and try to make things right if I have done wrong. Inadvertantly I may have been at fault and just wanted to put things right but that seems too difficult for some. Anyway I alerted the management in case there is any more trouble so I won't end up getting banned as that would have a greater effect on me than presumably him. Should be forgotten by now.:)

...only to brush past some youth doing a light military press muttering under his breath. Not knowing whether he was ok I walked over to him and asked him if he was ok.

So you heard him muttering and you went to the effort to walk back over and "ask him if he was ok" ?

Now I am not excusing his reaction but I doubt I am the only one thinking that the WAY in which you "asked him if he was ok" was potentially confrontational... You know, like "problem mate ?" etc (this was an example, not saying you used those exact words)

Not sure how the argument escalated as it's not very clear what was said from your side... You managed to quote his phrases but not yours

Just playing Devil's Advocate here....

Thing is I can quadruple it :D

Then just pick him up while he's holding the bar and military press the whole shebang...

So far I've been fairly fortunate in that I haven't had any altercations in the gym, generally as long as you're reasonably aware of what is going on and try not to inconvenience people too much it shouldn't be an issue. Of course there will always be some exceptions and times when you feel that the other guy deserves getting his foot run over with the bench but best not to do that anyway.
