The End Is In Sight For The PS3

Next will be the custom firmwares which hopefully Sony can detect (unless they can spoof it as being signed?) followed by loaders and eventually hacks or custom game patches (which could spell disaster tbh)

Answered your own question there as the master key allows software to run on the console as signed, i.e. the console flags nothing due to it seeing no problems.

Can PSN do something as obvious as checking that the software is (1) a version that is recognised as being released and (2) that the signature, as well as being valid, is the same (i.e. the hashes of the underlying software is the same as those released)?

Now that's where it is down to the software developer to enforce it, for example in Bops currently there have been many hotfixes server side against cheaters (actually at one stage a simple USB stick could load aimbots and wallhacks in to that game did you notice?).

So I don't think half of what has been posted will happen as the online is pretty much governed by master servers anyway on consoles that will easily check the FF that contain information on health, ammo etc, if your version doesn't match the Master servers then you don't play.

Remember there are no dedicated user controlled servers for console gaming so it's not going to get out of hand as long as the devs stay on top of it.

BUT a non genuine exact copy of the game will be able to go online as the PS3 will see it as legit as will the online section.

Sony can not "just bring out new hardware with bits changed" as suggested above. This is like no console hack seen before. This system is completely opened up and compromised. The word "owned" has never been more appropriate.

In time we will see custom firmware developed that will probably natively run the "jailbreak" in the form it is now known and run as. The consoles will finally be able to run MKVs natively. Anything is possible. There are no future "problem titles" for hackers, and no more cat and mouse games. Sony can't do anything about this. This is it...it's wide open for the rest of the life of the PS3. Yeah, if you like PS3 online it probably is bad for you, but life goes on. Sony will not become crippled from this. Games will still sell and people will still carry on as normal. A small minority of PS3 users will use the PS3 to run homebrew and use the console as something close to what it once promised, and yes also have the ability to pirate any game released for the PS3.

The ps1 and ps2 were great success stories at launch. It's only in the past year that the ps3 has started to really shine.

The ps3 at launch was a nightmare for Sony, It was almost crippling for there gaming side.

I havent read all the replies, but why would this be bad for the Playstation itself? It will increase sales if anything, its the game makers and game companies that are going to get hit, not Sony.. and as long as games continue to develop (which they will), Sony will continue to manufacture the Playstation.

Sony should be happy, lol

Sony make the vast majority of their revenue from games sales. They make next to nothing on sales of the actual console.

Well Sony will never see it as a good thing for them which is evident from the law suits that occured straight after the jailbreak "outbreak".

Great news for Virgins everywhere.

i think the scale of piracy on the nintendo DS prooves this won't just be something that infantile console fanboys will be using.

neither can they make money from a monopoly on peripherals and use this to sell over priced controllers and accessories like Microsoft do.

LOLOL anyone remotely interested in hacking/homebrew is a saddo virgin with no life LOLOL

Well to be honest the way you have been banging on about it you make it sound like the single most important thing to happen in the world ever.

Its more a comment about the immaturity of attitude displayed concerning this matter.

As if this is going to be used by anybody for anything else other than running illegally pirated software.
Its a bare faced lie by all concerened who say otherwise.

Who CARES?

On a side note this topic is hardly setting the world on fire, putting PS3 hacked into google give no search results more recent than last september.

Banging on about it? I've simply been commenting in threads about a subject I find interesting. I didn't even start the threads. And I've not acted like it's the biggest thing ever, in fact if you actually read what I said you'll see that I don't actually think it will change anything for the main userbase of the PS3, however for the (probably ~5% of total) PS3 owners who are interested in this stuff it IS a big thing.

Excuse me for contributing to a forum discussion :rolleyes:

Ironic, coming from somebody who basically posted 'lol virgins'.

I think the thread title is a bit sensationalistic tbh. The only way it could've been even more over the top would've been if it said the world was going to end.

Not really Ironic, as well as supporting Copyright infingement you also dont understand the english language.

The word you would be looking to use in this instance were it remotely applicable would be "hypocrite" Roll eyes roll eyes smiley face.

OK, I've clearly insulted you in a previous life or something. I'm not interested in getting into a pathetic and petty slanging match.

Hi, I like my ps3 and the mkv thing is the single most annoying thing ever.

If it was jail broken cleanly I'd use it and probably download some of the more random b grade games.

End in sight for PS3?? If anything i think this will push the life of the console on for years and years more than intended! I hate piracy yes, Cant stand it. But a fully homebrewed PS3 is without a doubt a force to be reckoned with. Console sales will go up and up!!

Only downside i foresee is the complete ***** who decided to start using trainers\aimbots online, oh and software sales will take a hit

Which doesn't make Sony much money.

EDIT: Just looking into this for the first time, I'm quite surprised how much of a loss making exercise selling consoles is. At launch it was estimated the PS3 cost around $805 to produce and was sold at a loss of between $225 and $305 per unit. Only with the PS3 Slim has this finally become profitable - though probably in the region of a few dollars a go.

Only downside i foresee is ... software sales will take a hit
Which does.

Why is MKV playback so high on everyone's list? Can't you just use MKV2VOB and play your files in a MPG container instead?
