Does this seem like a fair but firm price (recent job from my on the side pc repair business)

I used to charge £40p/h lol, if I less than 15 mins, they would get the callout for free. This rarely happened, but when it did. The cust was more than greatful and bobs your uncle, 10 calls the day after from that cust's relatives/friends and stuff hoping they can get a quick free fix.

The catch though... Dead simple, honesty!

I would sit there for 15 mins, work out the exact issue, let the cust know, roughly how many hours it would take and go from there. If they said 'no thanks' I would simply hand them a card with my number on, let them know what the issue is without a description of fixing it and walk away. Never, ever did I not get a call back.

"Roger, the computer is still not working"
"IT guy wanted £40 to fix it!"
"It cost £600... pc world want £120"
"Fine you old hag... *Ring* Hey, it's Roger, mind rebooking?"

Kaching.

ags

So true, good way of hooking them as well as getting good word of mouth around. Sneaky bugger..

Keep going and I bet you get banned shortly. ;)

Banned for posting my opinion in a GD thread? Only if the mods are going to have a nerd rage like you lot.

My opinion is totally valid. Whether you like my opinion or not really doesn't matter does it? That's the joys of discussion, correct?

If this dentist is happy to pay £90-100 for something he's capable of doing himself with a little research via Google, then fine. I'll just laugh and carry on merrily.

As for this

I guess that you are fully self sufficient for energy and water, let alone food and clothing?
Did you build your own house and make your own car?
Surely the oil you could have gone and dug for yourself?

Also you don't need to know something to know you have been ripped off. I bet you know bugger all about dentistry, yet you comment on dentists 'raping' you.

You missed the point. Those are skilled jobs, and skills I'd happily pay for. Basic computer stuff like the OP posted is not skilled work. The dentist himself with a little help from Google could do all that in a matter of an hour or two. If he's willing to pay 100 quid due to sheer laziness, then more fool him.

If you must carry on moaning about my post, hell even report it if I offended you in some obscure way.

You're average computer user does not know how to migrate outlook, sitting on google doesn't count.

Maybe if you advertised your services you will see that the average home user will have no idea how to do an outlook migration, a Windows re-installation, data recovery, hardware upgrades, even a healthcheck without further screwing up their laptop - As mentioned I have seen people trying to give their own machines a healthcheck and its gone horribly wrong killing their machine completely and having to recover data.

Some people have no idea when it comes to purchasing and configuring a router from scratch

Some people cannot operate and tune their own TV's let alone PC's.

Why do you think there is a gap in the market for this field? for the people that want to learn themselfs, go for it, however there will always be the people who dont want to.

What about when you have to fix a boiler at home, or mend a washing machine, or dishwasher, or replace the engine in your car "yourself" maybe you should "Read up on google" ;)

So If I call you names, in the GD thread is that OK?

They are not valid. Your missing the point.

I can pull your teeth out with pliers, or how about one just knocking them out? and then I will charge you £100. I'm an expert remember.

Yes, Yes I see your point. So a dentist can sit there on Google can they. Just while they operate on someone. Using PCs is not a skilled job. Fixing them is.

What you don't realise is that some people would rather not sit and 'diagnose' a PC. They would rather get on with their own job that requires a PC. You just remember next time you take a car to a garage, go to the dentist or even pay for your own education! Fool.

PS. I am going to charge you just because you posted this thread

You lazy peace of poo you!!!! Could you not have Googled the answer? eh? eh? eh? >>> DOOR THIS WAY.

PS I think I will Google everything from now on instead of relying on professionals and experts. Christ I won't ever have to pay again! I wil be able to make my own petrol, build my own house. Damn even might become a businessman. Do you recon Google will tell me how I can fly to the moon and live up there?

.

I can happily google "how to clean blocked sewage outlet" or "how to prune a tree"

can I be arsed to do either?

no

I'll pay people who know how to do it and carry on doing something else, laughing and carrying on merrily

It started off as leaflets and postcards, free entrance in yell.com website and another local directory website, however after I got a few under the belt it turned more in to word of mouth and now some business cards here and there.

I am building up a nice customer base who come back to me, however I'm trying to keep it building up at a nice sustainable rate rather than full force as I still want to concentrate more on my main career.

Clever man, a good way to put some spare time to use. i might give it ago

First thing, i am not moaning I am arguing the point, there is a difference :P

Now, I would go off on a business rant and give you some good information on why people would pay for this service, but instead I'll let you google it. Needless to say, with your personal skills and your excellent business skills you must be on your way to being one of the top businessmen in the UK.

How much do you pay for advertising on Yell.com ? I've looked and the free ad seems to be several pages deep, meaning far less likely to be seen.

Nothing,

I know its going to be a few pages down, however you do get the odd few bites, I have been to a couple and asked where they seen me advertise and they said Yell.com

Unless you want to pay £100+ (Which I dont) your not going to be getting that high in the ratings on them big websites.

To be honest id much rather spend the effort on business cards or leaflets, but its personal preference really.

I put a computer repair add in to yell, and I know someone else that did they got jack **** from it...

get 20k post cards from vistaprint and post them round your local area..

I would do it all for free and in less time than it took you :)

But if I were charging a stranger then your prices seem very reasonable.

Usually I let them go to PC World/Computer stores first and get the estimate, then say I'll do it for half price - providing it's not replacing broken parts etc. That way they're very happy and often tip/repeat service.

Well if you do it quicker you earn less, there just realtistically isn't a time period less than an hour in computer constultancy.

I'm confident I could claim it would take twice as long, dress up what I did and charge five times the price.

It's all about knowing your target market.

It's not laziness. Time is money.

The dentist's time is worth £100+ per hour.

Time spent fixing his computer himself is time he's not spending either earning money, or enjoying his precious free time.

People pay to have this done? LOL

This is like people who pay to have their car oil changed.

More money then sense.

Back on topic - rape him for what you can, as he obviously knows jack **** about computers.

than not then.

FAIL.
