Is there a point when you should start getting sensible cars?

Is there a time/age when you should just give up and get a people carrier or something similar?

In my book, once a "boy racer" - always a "boy racer" - in my case more of the "Old Git Racer" :D

Eons ago I bought a brand new Red VW Golf Mk1 GTI - dbs all the way. Followed it with 6 more GTIs of VW and Pug types.
Earlier last year in the market for a new car; the wife wanted me to get a 3 litre diesel XF - I wanted a Caymen S - in the end a S3 appeared in our garage. Now what have Audi done - the RS3:mad: Shoudda waited;)

My old man is 60, and while he has lost his adventurous side with car choice, he always finds some way to tinker with his car. He's in the stage of having multiple GPS setups in his car, and he always makes sure he has over the top brakes and tires. He drives a 2.0 vtec Honda Accord, but still drives like a boy racer :P

NEVER.

I think there is when you have children. A R34 Skyline just wouldn't cut it at 40.

NEVER.

It was the first condition of proposal - I'll always own the car I want.

Tbh if she tries to interfere shes in for a massive dead leg.

Old age perhaps, I say this as my Dad has recently ,finally, got a Mercedes after a long line of BMW's.

Until now, he's never felt quite old enough for one (He's in his mid 70's!):D

I think if you've lived a little (read as fallen over drunk/not drunk, slouched a lot/bad diet/overly ambitious kama sutra positions with those twins etc) your body starts to insist on "sensible" cars whilst your heart still has the boy racer yearning.
I love rapid twitchy small(er) cars but I also love being able to get out of them after a drive without having to crawl on hands n knees into the house. Ideal car for me would be a La-Z-Boy recliner in a majorly modded mk1 golf gti.

Enjoy life in whatever way you want to. Nothing wrong with wanting a fun car regardless of age. It's all well and good saying you should buy a Porsche at 40 but maybe houses, kids are more important than running a car like that and little fun cars still press the right buttons :)

Everyones different, there's no right or wrong, just whatever you think is best :)

This reminds me, what happened to that guy with the Polo and he has a Landy for proper off road? Malc?

4T5.

I think that you can look silly driving a car that is patently unsuitable for you (me folding myself into small cars for instance) but provided you enjoy it then who cares what anyone else thinks?

You are never too old for 'silly' cars. There may come a stage where life dictates that you need something a bit sensible for practicality purposes, but that doesn't stop you also having a second daft 'toy' if you have the means.

:o

Im almost hitting 40 and have always tinkered with the cars I have had and to coin a phrase, been a bit of a boy racer.
Twenty years ago I had a modded Mini and then a Pug 309GTI which I was always adding bits to. I then met my wife and went through a sensible period when we had a 1.4 Escort.
I soon got very bored of that and when we had our first kid I managed to get as Vectra 2.5 SRI. A few years later the wife wanted sensible again and we got a Landrover Freelander. We had loads of mechanical issues with that and then got an Audi A4 3.0 Quattro estate.
Last year the wife wanted a second 2nd card and I managed to swing a Fiesta ST.
The issue now is that I am beginning to get the modding bug again. I had to replace a broken spring on the ST and ended up doing all 4 springs with lowered Eibachs;) Hoping to get an induction kit soon as well.

Is there a time/age when you should just give up and get a people carrier or something similar?
They all look like sensible cars to me, except maybe for the Mini :D

I have no interest in anything sensible. If I was doing any miles I might consider something with side windows and a heater, but until then I'm happy with something completely ludicrous.
