is Mass Effect 1 worth persevering with ?

I played it originally on xbox, I hated it. I then got it on the PC, hated it. I then decided to give it one last attempt and loved it. I never completed it due to a format and loosing my save game but I loved it. Will go back when I'm not addicted to wow.

Keep going for at least a few more hours, brilliant game.

But different people, different tastes. Some swear Jade Empire is great, I just couldn't get along with it.

I made a thread on this recently. Mass Effect 1 had never grabbed me, but over xmas I gave it a final shot as I had a decent amount of free time and gave it my full attention (imo it isn't a game you can play whilst watching tv).
Now I have gotten into it and it is pretty good. I bought Mass Effect 2 for £10 from a big etailer for when I finish ME1.

im just playing through the second one, while i love the story, characters, etc, i must admit the action / shooting parts are a tad repetative, still i love a good story , so i will stick with it.

im actually about to start ME1 again and play right through, then same with ME2 and when iv finished that i will play ME3 :)

I really should have played it before Dragon Age (a better contender for 'Greatest rpg of the decade' tbh) as i didn't last more than a couple of hrs on ME1 either.

I am just waiting a while before i give it another go

I prefer the original - the environments are less gamey than the sequel, which telegraphs whenever you're about to go into combat by scattering waist high boxes/crates/rocks about an open area. The mission areas were much bigger and more unique too. It also had a much more epic story with some amazing reveals. Definitely worth continuing with.

One thing would have made ME1 better is a storage chest or something similar on the Normandy.
My inventory was always full and I could have done with being able to sort through it and leave some behind while on missions

No, if you dont enjoy the start theres no point carrying on imo. Its a game that you just know you'll love soon as you play it rather then have to grow into it. Thats what i think anyway.

Don't like it. Never have, never will.
Complex story that masks how repititive the gameplay elements actually are.
Run here, talk to someone, run there, talk to someone else.
Watch A LOT of cutscenes.
Shoot a bit.
Watch ANOTHER LOT of cutscenes.
Talk to some more people. Oh look, a cutscene!
Repeat.
If I want a story, I read a book, I like to play my PC games, not be forced to watch almost endless filmie thingies.
But then again, all a matter of taste.
Every RPG... most FPS games, third person games... heck most games in general are like this though?

Greatest RPG series of the last decade - definitely worth persevering with.

Folk who don't get this game have no taste.

+1, probably first RPG I played and finished and still Remains my favorite game next to Bioshock!

Great story line, great characters loads of upgrades, more you play, more you get in to! Great Fun! (I played probably all most popular games from last couple years and this one I can defo recommend)

I finished both parts, and now playing ME1 again, using saves from my first play, so all guns/upgrades are already in... + you can load save files when you play ME2 to continue Story you played in ME1.

I'm finding ME2 a lot more fun than the first one, and I actually put off buying it for ages because they'd pulled so many of the RPG elements.

But the actual result is that it's a much more fluid and entertaining game, without having to muck around converting stuff to omni gel and driving that bloody buggy. People say the story isn't as good, but there's a huge amount of detail written into everything, and some of the side quests are really good. Characterisations are a lot better this time around too, and you get to own a space hamster.

No game with space hamsters has ever been bad. Ever.

I disagree.

I bought it on release day, played it for around an hour and a half then shelved it, utterly dejected. I just didn't get on with it at all, and wandering around the Citadel in the early stages was doing my head in.

Came back to it a week or two later and thought I'd give it another chance. After about another hour it was like a switch was flipped and I realised it was actually a magnificent game. So much so, that it's one of my favourite games of all time. OF ALL TIME!

ME2 is indeed better - though only marginally.

ME2 > ME1 :) *stir*

* apart from the stupid planet scanning bits.
Ooh, can-worms-opened.

ME1 Virmire-Ilos-End Run is the best part of both games, though the suicide mission is still incredibly fun.

Greatest RPG series of the last decade - definitely worth persevering with.

I wouldn't say that as I can't speak for everybody - a lot of people like hardcore shooters, but that's their loss... :p
For me it comes close to most favourite game ever, second only to KotOR.

To answer the OP's question, yes persevere with it - at least until you've got the Normandy and done one main planet and Virmire. Then you can decide for yourself.

And I will say this again:
1) Do not bother with the collection quests (minerals/ID tags/gases), as they are just a tedious waste of time.
2) Complete side missions as you acquire them in your journal - do not systematically scour the entire galaxy to complete all the quests - you will get bored.
3) Do not play higher than hardcore, as combat is made far too dull by immunity spamming enemies which take hours to kill. Veteran is the sweet spot.
