Horlicks- the drink that is supposed to help you sleep....does it?

I'm a fan, it probably doesn't help but I enjoy having one in bed, especially in winter as it warms me up!

Counting sheep doesn't work if you're welsh.

You just end up unable to sleep with a raging hardon :(

Stick it in the girl lying next to you*?

*not applicable if you are in a hospital, you could try I suppose but I won't be held responsible.

Ah someone as messed up as me, I'm same as my Dad and always struggle to fall asleep in silence. That could have course could have something to do with the fact that I suffer from tinnitus so re watching that episode of Scrubs is more appealing that the sound of ringing bells :p
Another member of the easier to get off to sleep while listening to something club here, I've always put it down to giving you something to focus on, used to suffer from insomnia pretty badly, I've managed to adjust myself over the past few years since having live-in girlfriends, still usually listen to something if I'm sleeping alone though.
Also found that sleeping with comfortable earphones in playing something really helps in noisy environments, like camping at festivals.

I think if anything, it would do the opposite due to the sugar it contains.

A lot of it is probably placebo affect, you think it will help you sleep so it does exactly that.

Eating a lot of sugar makes you less alert. It makes an insulin spike that makes your cells absorb more nutrients. In the simplest terms because insulin is also a growth factor it forces your cells to soak up amino acids which would otherwise be going up to your brain to make it work better. That frees up brain space for tryptophan, which makes you sleepy.

I remember laughing at one class at school whose teacher would give them all mars bars before exams "for brain energy" lol.

If you want to stay alert for a long time eat something low glycemic and a lot of protein, like grapefruit juice and steak & eggs, which is what they would feed SR-71 pilots before missions.

Does this stuff actually work?

The main point is mixing with milk, and heating it up, this warms your body, causing your body to slow down to cool yourself down.

So i suppose just milk should be enough really, if you drink it as hot as you can handle it, and quickly, and then try to sleep immediately after.
