Multi car pile up on the motorway

Already put a message on FB but will post here too, ouch! I know the feeling after t-boning a brand new X-Type at similar speeds. That said I was working in the kitchens (was a student at the time) the next day despite being black and blue from the waist down. I wasn't in the pain you describe though, I was very very lucky.

Hope it's not too bad seeing as you're the sporting type, don't want it holding you back. Surprised the Ka managed to disappear after what is evidently a nasty smash. I take it the Ka had nothing else to smash into so got away with it compared to you in the middle.

The moral of the story here is though, never get in a courtesy car with you. In fact, I think you should stop getting courtesy cars! I;d be paranoid from now on if I was you :p

Sorry for being harsh - but IMHO the worst drivers are those too arrogant to understand how badly they drive.

Is he that bad a driver?

I hope they find the KA!

they probably hit it and its the tiny pieces all over the carriageway.... thats why they couldn't find it.

Sucks big time though, i don't understand why people are so stupid. But one has to ask why people were doing 50+mph past a stopped lane1? People are bound to pull out and cause this. :(

Typical response from FOX

He didn't say at any point that he was blaming the Ka driver?? Did he say it was the Ka drivers fault?? NO - he pointed out that it pulled out in front of another car - end of.

I'm guessing fox is drawing on personal knowledge of the OPs driving style, as they have met a few times.

Hope you get better Tom. Everyone is up your backside on the third lane on the motorway, it's standard. However, you have to take everything into consideration, road surface, tyres, brakes.

its true though. The only driver that inst at fault is the insignia. Someone pulled in front of him causing him to crash. The fact that two other cars went into the rear of him is purely down to them other drivers.

And as fox said, WHY are they steaming past a queue of traffic, its a MASSIVE hazard, and there driving should change to match the risk.

Looks like you could have come off a lot worse. Hope it all gets sorted, and this elusive KA shows up.

I'm not saying it's not true - of course it's true that the OP piling into the back of someone elses car is the OP's fault. I'm just saying that a whole post of basically slagging someone's driving style off/ability is probably not what the OP wanted right now!;)

Quite right, that said, the OP knows Fox & this place well enough to know what happens when you stick your head up into the line of fire!

Welcome to OCUK, the truth hurts but that doesn't mean we won't beat you with a stick.

You seem to be forgetting that lots of us are friends so it's not like a normal forum.

Leaving sufficient stopping distance on the motoroway is annoying as someone from the middle lane always fills it.

Back off to leave sufficient distance, someone else pulls into the gap, repeat...

It should be an offence to fill a gap on a motorway unless it's longer than a certain distance.

I do think the 2 chevron apart rule as featured on some of our motorway networks is a good idea. So why isn't it standard?

Looks a right mess. Unlucky there fella. How far from the Elk Mill retail park were you?

I agree that I should've been further back, as that is the logical answer to this in any situation really. The truth is, the insignia driver had pulled into my lane 10-15 seconds earlier (still a decent distance away, not a cutting up by any means) and I had let off the throttle to let the gap open up with engine braking.

It was still the kind of gap that in "normal" situations i wouldnt have even felt miffed if someone had pulled out into it with a matched speed, and in most "normal" emergency braking situations where the car infront didnt have the aid of an 800kg block of metal traveling a lot slower than him to help slow him down, probably would've been enough .

Its is the first time ive had to do anything remotely like an emergency stop in a car with budget skinny tyres, and not great discs and pads, and I do believe that I wouldve managed to shed a LOT more speed, if not even enough to have avoided the insignia completely in my car with v. good, wide tyres and decent pads/disks. Still no excuse, it's my fault as I shouldve adjusted my driving more to the car i was driving but it's hard to contemplate exactly how much difference it makes until it comes to the crunch

I fear now that in future ill just end up having everyone pulling into the gaps ive created, as it certainl has had more of a toll on me than you believe it will have done Fox.

Also as to the 'queue' of traffic, perhaps ive given the wrong impression, it was a slowing down line of cars still doing 30-35 but all braking.
