is Mass Effect 1 worth persevering with ?

ME series is for me almost a hybrid into a feature film. If you are the type of person who loves watching films and likes story driven narrative you will get on with Mass Effect. Its sort of like a mature game a million miles away from brain dead rubbish like COD.

Personally i think ME2 might be of the best games in the last decade

+1.
The atmosphere in the ME series is just awesome. It's really like playing through a feature film; very few games can pull that off convincingly.

There were some PITA issues like the planet exploration/mako/mining segments, but in general both ME and ME2 are A++ games, ME2 being slightly better in my book because it fixed a few things that bugged me in ME1.

Both are among the very best games I've ever played regardless of genre.

Its just that some of the game started winding me up.

Like when you join that spectre and are told to go to A to get upgraded equipment yet when you get there you dont have the money to buy anything. Whats the point of that ?

What the game needs is a decent tutorial.

The story is intriguing though and I like that Galactic map.

I knew ME1 was quality within 20 mins of starting the game.
Really enjoyed it from the start and must have completed 4 or 5 run thoughs in the year or two before ME2 came out.

I would suggest to the OP and anyone else that is wondering if its gonna get better, NO it will probably not get better for you tbh.

You may still like ME2 as that is less on story and adventure, but much more focus on action.

ME1 is one of my favourite games of all time mainly due to the great storyline which is my favourite story within a game ever. Looking forward to ME3!

Bought ME1+2 in the xmas Steam sales but like the OP not finding the compulsion to play for long both are seriously boring & long winded. Fell for the hype from other players & cannot see why this is highly acclaimed at all.

At best its an average but long winded sci-fi RPG that steals all of its combat gameplay from Gears Of War & or A.N. other duck n hide then shoot :(

No, if you dont enjoy the start theres no point carrying on imo. Its a game that you just know you'll love soon as you play it rather then have to grow into it. Thats what i think anyway.

Disagree with this, the start is slow because it doesn't do a great job of explaining the gameplay mechanics, how you can upgrade stuff, etc. but once you get into the first proper mission off the citadel and get your head around how some of the stuff works its a much much better game.

They should have done a better job of introducing the game really.

I feel that both were awesome games, but the second one left me a bit disappointed. Mainly because I finished on the second day. Did no one else think the main story was pretty short?

Keep playing, it get's better.

I loved the first one, the second one they messed it up by taking out a lot of rpg elements. All that was left was story and shooting :( But I still liked it.

It's not all that hard to watch the many video reviews available.

They would have been more than enough to let you know whether it was worth it or not, rather than believing hype.

Long-winded = any rpg in history

Both games take a while to get into, and they both have extremely tedious parts to their gameplay at times (mako & mining) but they are well worth it for the characters + story.

Combat is much better in ME2. As are the biotic / tech powers you get to play with.

P.S Gears stole the duck n hide mechanics from Kill.Switch on the PS2.

Started the game about 2-3days ago, just got off the Citadel and started to do some missions on another planet or whatever. It started off slow but was never a chore and now i can feel that i'm really getting into it.

I can tell by the time i'm near the end it'll be one of my favourite games and i'm glad i'm playing through it instead of just going onto Mass Effect 2.

I think the people who're saying it's not that great just arn't into these sorts of games. KoToR was a great game and had a lot of similar mechanics, whether or not Mass Effect is better i don't know yet but chances are if you like one you'll like the other.

I tried it a couple of years ago, got off the spaceship and then gave up.... dunno why but it didn't grab me in the way KOTOR did (and the general consensus seems to be that KOTOR starts slowly).

Still planning to revisit it when I can find the case though.

Is it one of those Games that you like straight away or is it one of those thats Meh to begin with but then rewards later ?

I bought this the other day and Ive been playing it for around an Hour and a Half and I have to say that I'm finding it a tad boring.

At the moment I'm on a huge space station and have all these places to go yet when I click on the map it just shows the section where I am and not where I should go. So I'm just ambling along which is pretty frustrating.

Also why do you start of with all these guns which you suck at using ? I mean ok I guess you have to level up before your proficient with them but when you get into a fire fight you have 2 guns your selecting which dont work very well. I mean your a super soldier but cant use a shotgun WTF ?:D

I dont want to write the game off totaly as lots of folks rave about it and the Aliens look kinda nice.:D

Does it get better as you progress ?

this pretty much sums up my opinion of mass effect

The problem with Mass Effect is that it's an RPG that looks like an FPS. Anyone who picks it up expecting CoD in space is definitely not going to be happy :)

And admittedly allowing you to equip weapons you're not proficient in was a dumb move, it just confuses people who naturally whip out the biggest gun they have, and then get annoyed when it doesn't seem to hit anything.

I didnt expect COD in space at all. Just engaging gameplay and the ability to know where I am to go.

I mean I'm over 2 hours in and cant grasp the leveling up system for the life of me and isnt that fundamental for a RPG the leveling up ?

Also most RPG's have a key normaly TAB that you press and it tells you your current task at hand.

I dont expect the game to play itself but it could be a little more instructive.

Also that Citadel looks pants no way does it convey the size of what it is.

Anyhow I havent given up on it yet as I am a Generous man and I intend to give it chance. lol :D
