Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

After hard resetting my SGS and making contact with KIES I re-installed software and go tthe same problem.
Turns out that ADW Launcher buggers it up.

Another problem -
KIES now won't let me upgrade.

Model name: GT-I9000
Current Version : PDA:JM1 / Phone:JM1
This devices version cannot be updated

The reason it wasn't working is that the phone won't connect to Kies properly unless you're using TwLauncher (i.e. not ADW or LauncherPro).

Take a look at this. Let's you fool Kies into upgrading pretty much anything.

Before you upgrade, make a copy of your efs folder and put it somewhere safe, and make sure you have the 3-button recovery/download modes available.

Orange.

After seeing and comparing 2 people in my office who have upgraded I can't see the point however I wouldn't mind updating to Froyo.
Also if my phone was to brick and I sent it back surely I had gone against the guarantee?

It's stupidly difficult to brick your phone unless your a utter numpty, even if you do samsung can and do fix it for a relatively small charge apparently.

Do the above using root explorer , and hold up on rocker switch , hold down the hem button then press and hold power button you'll get I to recovery if you can do that your sorted.

Check you tube loads of videos on how to get to do it.

Hope this helps :)

When I say 'brick' I mean if it goes faulty through every day use.
Surely sending it back with a custom rom on invalidates your guarantee?

Anyway, I can't do the 3 button trick.

Just installed Darky's v8.0 ROM and damn my phone is flying! Was abit scared about flashing 2e recovery with Odin but was well worth it :D

If you could get into recovery ,and flash a Rom.and the phones goes wrong you can simply put a stock Rom back on.

If your happy with a standard Rom that's fine i just thought id mention it. But kies really a bag of turd !!!

These are Darky's instructions but first of all (nothing tells me this) do I have to root the phone first?

I downloaded a SGS rooting file called update.zip and put it on my internal SD card does this mean when I go onto my phone memory and I see the SD directory I put it in there?

I did the 3 button thing and got to the screen and clicked on update.zip, it did something with a bar and rebooted but nothing told me I was rooted how do I know?

Now Darky's instructions -

1. Download the ROM from above (Darky's V8), and put it on your INTERNAL SD-Card.
Don't unzip it, as this will break the signature. Does this mean the SD directory on the phone memory?

Do I have to rename it later to update.zip?

2. Download ClockworkMod Recovery from above.
You need ClockworkMod Recovery, as this won't work with the stock recovery.

3. Put ClockWorkMod Recovery on your INTERNAL SD-Card.

Do I have to rename it to update.zip?

6. Select "Apply SDCARD:update.zip" (use volume keys/rocker to move up and down, and HOME button to select).
ClockworkMod Recovery will boot now (you may have to do the "Apply update.zip" twice for ClockworkMod Recovery to show up).

I got rid of the old update.zip, renamed the clockwork to update.zip, ran it, got a bar, it rebooted but how do I know if it's now got Clockworkrecovery on?

Well I took my phone to the Samsung repair centre, they couldn't get it into download mode so they have sent it off to Samsung...see what the results are in 1-2weeks.

Theres a program called Odin which will root the phone with a click pretty simple.

Yes clockwork and darkys rom on the internal SD card

Clockwork mod is called update.zip as standard isnt it? darkys rom you can shorten the name to darkys or something.

Apply "update.zip" which is clockwork mod, this will give you a new recovery mode giving you more options than the standard 2e is it?

Once clockwork mod is working you can apply Darkys via the clockwork mod menu.

For rooting I used this - GalaxyS_I9000_One-Click_Root
It uses a bat file which puts the update.zip into the correct directory and then reboots into recovery mode for me to then run the ZIP.

I then put this into the phone SD directory - recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-galaxys.zip and renamed it update.zip but when I run it I don't get a new recovery menu!!

UPDATE -
Just done it with ROM Manager, got the new recovery menu and just installing Darky Rom

Definitely ON.
I'm re-flashing with the wipe one now.

I'm on Darky's 7 and the auto rotation button in the notification menu got stuck "on" the other day so it couldn't be turned off, but the screen wouldn't rotate. Changing auto rotation in Settings works fine, though the button in the notification menu still doesn't work.

Anyway, it might be worth changing rotation in Settings if you're still having problems to see if that sorts it.

Can anyone give me the lowdown on GPS with the Galaxy S? I read that it was a bit flakey - slow to lock on to signals, and frequently dropping the connection. Was this just a release day thing, Is it fixed now?

Can still be a little flakey fine for driving ,but if you use it to walk with it can get a bit confused ,but soon corrects itself.

Dmpoole have tired as said going into the setting and nit using the drop down the menu.

TBH people love darkys rom but I think something is not qute right with it.

ON V5 when i tried to back up using rom manager it crashed my phone I had to reboot. Also it appears it's touching the boot sector , which is shouldn't do. Admittedly it's only he odd person who have had issues.

I'm no expert on it just my opinion

hope you get it sorted
