BBC reported her to be dead earlier (around 9), now just gravely wounded.

The bullet apparently passed. Through her brain, that won't be good even if she lives through this.

Depends, there's still so little we know about the brain. I remember reading a story about a man who lived with a pipe in his heed and functioned perfectly normally.

My guess would be it was done for Jesus. She was socially liberal, and a high profile opponent of the morally righteous fundamentalist christian right.
