Edit!!
It seems that the motherboard the OP has already supports the 95W version of the Phenom II X4 and Athlon II X4:

The HT will not run at full speed but a Phenom II X4 or an Athlon II X4 will be a decent upgrade over a 2.4GHZ Phenom X27450.
What PSU do you have ATM??
What is the main use for the PC BTW??
A Core i5 2500K seems to be around 15% faster than a Phenom II X6 1100T in Adobe After Effects:

Since you said you tend to prefer AMD you do know that AMD Bulldozer is being released in April this year?
The current Phenom II is a descendant of the original Athlon 64 launched many years ago. AMD Bulldozer is a totally new architecture from the ground up. IPC will increase and so will the number of cores too.
so basically , this will be quicker than anything we have ever seen ?
Quicker than anything we've seen from AMD, yes.
It's not supposed to compete with SandyBridge though, its being released to compete with the current i3/i5/i7 lines

So i should still go with the sandy bridge ?
It has potential to be very quick.
Anyway, it will mean Intel has more competition and prices should be better on BOTH AMD and Intel processors.
Unless, you really need an upgrade now I would wait and see how things turn out in the next six months.
One thing though!
I would keep track of RAM prices and get some 1600MHZ RAM at least before they start getting more expensive. OTH,I do not have any idea whether RAM prices have bottomed out ATM.
Yeah, you won't get better performance for the price.
Besides, AMDs Bulldozer doesn't come out with something like Q3 2011 (so autumn, and that's it it isn't delayed further)
