Caribbean - which island?

I've been to the Dominican. I can't but help think there has to be better?

From what I've heard St Lucia is beautiful. Think that may be my next stop when I go back to that part of the world.

Depends where you go, we know people who went to the north of the island on a cheap deal and hated the place.

fantastic the place like nothing on this earth better than sandals in jamaica.

From what I've seen of it I'd have to agree (from photos and stories) - but I don't speak from personal experience. :) Really must make a point of going there... Though I already have 4 major holidays booked this year so it might have to be 2012! :D

Barbados or St.Lucia. Tobago is nice as are the Grenadines which belong to St.Vincent (not Grenada funnily enough lol), Mustique is a lovely place but insanely expensive.

Yup that would be about right! I went to Puerto Plata, 4 star resort. Spent about £1500 each excluding spending money.

Really didn't like it at all. The complex didn't really have much entertainment in the evenings but if you dared to venture outside of it then you'd be hounded by everyone. Although we did a couple of nights and found an Irish bar that did the best beer battered onion rings!
The food wasn't very nice and I was really ill for most of it.
The beach was a yukky brown colour and because there were so many sandstorms we only got to go onto it once. :(

The only highlights were the dolphin encounter, Safari Truck thing and going to Paradise Island which is a tiny island surrounded by gorgeous clear blue sea (although it is also home to thousands of jellyfish which I was unfortunate to discover when I got back into the boat lol)

Quite a few people had also seen rats around the swimming pools and restaurants :(

I'm really selling it here aren't I :p If you do consider Dom.Rep I'd suggest looking into it a bit and finding a website where people leave their reviews so that you get an idea of the place before you go.

Greneda was very nice.

Not been to any other islands so can't comment overall.

But seems very unspoilt and the chocolate plantation and everything has nutmeg in it.

Its probably not as developed as other islands.

Also there are some cool monkeys on the island.

Tobago is lovely. My mum comes from Trinidad so we spent a few days in Tobago before flying over to Trinidad. To be honest though, the beaches and scenery in Trinidad is just as nice but without the huge crowds of tourists! We went to several beaches in Trinidad where we had the whole place to ourselves. It helped that we were with family though as otherwise it's lacking in terms of stuff to do for tourists.

Yea Trinidad was aces, parents are from Guyana but lived in St.Vincent until 87. They got tons of family in Trinidad, so i've been a few times. Love the women.

Cheers for the info so far guys, much appreciated.

I'm still leaning towards the smaller islands as they seem to be a little more authentic when it comes to the Caribbean experience. I don't want to spend all that money to end up somewhere full of English people and culture!

St Lucia seems to be top of the list at the moment, gonna trawl through the usual websites and see what's what.

Any suggestions for ones to aim for or avoid? I've not booked many hols before (never had the money until recently) so I'm fairly new to this game.

I've been to Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica and the Bahamas (flying visit there). I would say out of those islands Tobago offered the most 'authentic' caribbean experience for me, and Jamaica the worst. I would thoroughly recommend Tobago and a visit to Trinidad if you can. Great islands and very different considering their connection.

Digressing slightly, has anyone noticed the prices of Caribbean holidays at the moment! They have shot up sky high. We try to do 4-5 star hotels where we go, and every destination we have been to has shot up by at LEAST £1,500 for two weeks. The only decent prices at the moment seem to be Cuba.

I'm almost the same age as you and went to Barbados last year and found it amazing. Island is about 30 miles across, tons to do so you wont be on the beach all day bored. Never felt in danger (except when approaching roundabouts ;) ) and had an amazing time.

Went to Antigua this year and couldn't recommend it enough... Great island with really friendly people, good history and nature, great beaches (365 of them!).

If your after a smaller hotel for a romantic relaxing holiday look at Blue Waters hotel or www.covesuites.com if you fancy something a bit more extravagant.

I really did not like Barbados,

Burning hot (no breeze, Island flat as a pancake), no natural attractions to remember, best beaches are private owned, people are anything but friendly unless your white and rich. Oh, and everything costs a fortune compared to the other islands (most items have US dollar pricing).

I have a WI background (St. Vincent) so my perception of BB would differ to people who have been only there.

I'd recommend St. Lucia, Grenadines, Dominica & Antigua.

Personally I want my next trip to be St. Kitts/Nevis, but can't recommend as I haven't been there yet.
