My mate has got himself in a right mess with the police..

I don't really know what I'd do in your mate's situation, but then I doubt I'd have got myself into it in the first place tbh.

He should probably just drop the charges and leave it at that, saying he's not sure if he remembers enough details. Either that or confess and hope the police don't push charges.

Carrying on would be the stupidest option, but it's up to your "mate." I watch this thread with interest. ;)
 
I think you are best suddenly getting a dose of amnesia and not remembering much. After all it was a traumatic event.

Come off it, give me some credit ffs, I may be stupid at times but even at the tender age of 23 when I was doing very silly things I wouldn't of went to the police and said such a thing.

Also I'm not saying it's right or anything but it is quite common people going to the police and lying to gain a crime reference number for their insurance, it's just that normally people don't say they were held at knife point, I said if he really wanted to go through with a dodgy claim he should have just said he bag was stolen off the train or something simple, the desk Sergeant would have given him the number and he would have been on his way.

And the reason why this was posted so late was I was up late with him discussing it, then I got home and discussed it with another mate that works late on the cabs to try and gain anther perspective, after that I thought I'd make a thread to gain more insight and also I thought it would make for an interesting thread.
 
he/you needs to confess asap. police have better things to do than have their time wasted by some little scrote. there are real crimes to be solved. also its a massive waste of tax payers money. id shove that iphone up his rectum.
 
So far you have an Officer taking a 4 page statement a good 2 hours work at least there, a shirt that has been seized, presumably to check for forensic evidence, that needs to be bagged, logged and sent away for examination. I would be amazed if some sort of resource, a PC or PCSO is not tasked with try to establish if there is any CCTV. Damn them idle rozzers!!!

If there is CCTV in the area and it is reviewed your friend is well are truly in the mire.

I hope is charged and the fraud reported.
 
He already got the replacement iPhone from the insurance company, but hasn't even touched it though, like I said I was only told about this last night but this was reported a week ago, I don't even have a contract phone before more people assume it was me.

Anyway one of the main reasons I made the thread was to see if people thought confessing would be the best option considering it was what I advised him to do, people have criticised my mate but at the same time we have people on here saying don't confess or ignore the police etc so I find that a little contradicting tbh.

Great, I know you didn't want to attract attention to your friend but he is the sort of person who pushes up insurance premiums up for others and causes problems by trying to fiddle the system.

He could have at least told a more realistic lie, like he believed he was pick pocketed and knows nothing more. They still give a crime ref.

Either way, if I some how got myself into this situation, I'd probably stick with the story. They will never catch any one and he will never be found out to have lied. If he keeps his cool. That's me though, I'd take the risk and be a jackass to save myself further punishment.

Having said that, does he really want to waste any further police time and resources on a wild goose chase?

probably because these are different peoples varying opinions, it's not like the same person changing his mind depending how the mood takes him!

I'm afraid I was born years ago, not yesterday :(

You don't have to press charges (which would be the only point in reporting a crime), or report a crime committed on yourself.

As said before, the police might be curious as to why you'd suddenly choose to stop pursuing it, particularly when they've already raised concern about the whole story.
