My mate has got himself in a right mess with the police..

It'd be funny if someone reported this thread to police and they asked OCUK for OPs details to find out the identity of the mate that way.

I'm sure some people are tempted..

It's ***** like this that are constantly putting our insurance premiums up.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) estimates undetected general insurance claims fraud totals £1.9bn a year. Of this figure, the IFB estimates the insurance industry’s exposure to fraudulent organised motor insurance claims per year is £350m, costing honest customers over £4 million every week. This adds on average £44 to the annual costs individual policyholders face, on average, each year.

I know its not phone specific but it gives you the idea.

Im not saying just tell the police but if he dose not come clean then I would.

My advice would be to confess.

The thing is they WILL find out. Be it now or later. They will find out he's lying, it's just a matter of when. Lessen the damage now rather than make it even worse further down the line.

What? Not speaking for Burnsey but I KNOW that mine wouldn't. Weird thing to say.

wow ok, perhaps it's the company I keep, I know loads of people that have done it, and I'm talking 'normal' family people here, married with kids working etc, mums, dads the lot.

As above really. They're just not the type of people to do that sort of thing.

What type of people you do think exaggerate on insurance claims?

I work for an Insurance company and I know for a fact that we wouldn't persue a case as small as this.

If he's going to get charged it would be for wasting police time, not insurance fraud. The police have no way of proving it didn't actually happen.

Rubbish, the OP's friend would have said where and when this happened, CCTV can easily prove or disprove it.

Not to dispute your friends integrity but people do do things that surprise us all the time regardless of how well we know them, especially thing like claiming on insurances when they shouldn't etc when they are financially desperate. (I'm not saying the OP was justified, but circumstances can make people do things that they would normally not even consider)

The thing here is that the chap has obviously been an idiot, tried to so something without thinking it through and it has bitten him the proverbial. It is up to his friends to convince him to own up and do the right thing, it is not incumbent on them to 'grass' him up themselves.

I certainly wouldn't do it a friend of mine over something that is pretty trivial in the big scheme of things, and I doubt that they would do so to me either.

Being totally honest and coming clean now is probably too late:

OP's Friend: I am really sorry officer, this actually never happened. i am so sorry for wasting your time

Police: Why did you make this up then?

OP's Friend: To get a brand new iPhone

Police: Have you received the new phone yet?

OP's Friend: Yes..

Police:........

Jeeze, there are far easier ways to wrangle a new phone on insurance than reporting a fake crime! For example, you know, just "drop" it perhaps?

How much of an eejit is this guy?
