6970 heat/noise

ok ive tried gaming, i picked avp as this seems to give the card a good work out, started off with stock settings and fan on auto highest temp was 77c and the fan went to 35%, i then set a fan profile with sapphire trixx the temp dropped to 64c with the fan at 42% so onward and upward i overclocked to 950/1450 and kept the fan profile and got the same temps as the non overclocked only once jumping to 66c and fan did not go above 42%, the room temp is 15c, now i cant say if i have a faulty card and reading the wrong temps or im just very lucky and picked up a very good card but those are the temps according to gpuz

no idea on how you got only 60c with the fan on auto , my 6970 hits 93c running msi kombuster . it idles at 40c with a room temp of 25c , also hits upto 91c while gaming . have i a faulty card ? , runs great apart from the temps

Same for me, My idle temp is 62C in a well ventilated case (dual screens)

My temps are about the same, I'm thinking of going watercooled again though because the fan noise is driving me bananas.

Hitting 90C on auto fan or even with a slighly modified fan profile is standard.

There are several threads similar to this where people report very low temps...they all end with a bunch of people who have perfectly normal cards wondering if their cards are actually borked.

Where someone posts temps this much lower either they are using a non stock fan profile or they are not measuring in realistic circumstances.

I think once afterburner supports voltage control things will be a lot more manageable- people with 6970s should be able to undervolt to 1.1v and shave a decent chunk off temps. (if most 6950s ll do 880 at 1.1v this stands to reason as the 6970s should be better cores).

Been gaming for around 10-12 hours today, max temp for my 6970 is 76 degrees, hotter than my 5870 but not that bad really, that's on auto fan and its very quite. Like this card a lot

thats pretty much the same as mine, on auto fan and stock settings the highest temp i got was 77c

what case are you using ? , my crossfired 5870s never went above 71c even in furmark for the top card . it has supprised me that amd have made a 5870 replacement this hot tbh , this seems to be the amd version of the fermi

the room temp is 15c,

This is how the op kept the temps down. To me is seems very cold room/house, im in the north east and i bloody freezing rad turned off in my office and still 22c room temps after an hour of gaming. Any way glad everyones happy and the temps are sorted :)

its because im too much of a tight wad to put the heating on:D

if its cold tomorrow im going to overclock the i7 920 and 6970 within an inch of its life and go for a suicide run on 3dmark06 to see if i can break the 6k score
