3 weeks ago, i got this problem with my ps3, any disc i put in, it wont get accepted, ps3 is ejecting the disc fine but not accepting it, the only way is to switch off the ps3, put the disc in and switch it on, then the disc will go in and work fine,

i bought my PS3 Slim 120gb on 14th Jan 2009 i got 3 days left on manufacturer's warranty of 1 year.....i phoned Sony up and they say they will replace the unit for £130 since my ps3 has ran out of warranty. my original ps3 unit was replaced back in april 2009, and the replacement unit comes only with 90 days warranty.....is it even true? i thought warranty was with the purchased i made not with the unit....any suggestions?

i have it next to me, the operator says, one year warranty was with the original unit, and since i had my original unit replaced with refurbished one, my warrany is no more, and replacement unit only has 3 months warranty, is it what am confused about, i think he is just bluffing, just to save sony some ££££

That's not right imo, after the first year then yes but if your still within your first year of manufacture warranty then any subsequent replacements should still be covered under that warranty.

I would either ask to speak with a manager or send them an e-mail explaining the situation - to have two units fail within a year and then want you to pay £130 for a repair isn't on.

my date of purchase is 14th Jan 2010, and today is 11th Jan 2011, i still got 3 days left, but the idoit says, no replacement units are not covered, and asking for £130 to replace....shall i phone them back insist that am covered under warranty?

Personaly I would, you should be covered under the sales of good act, ask to speak to a supervisor, make sure you explain to them that you are still within the first year of the manufacture warranty on the original unit and have proof of purchase, within that first year (and arguably after) they are obligated to repair/replace your faulty goods as many times as it takes.

Also you could ring Consumer Direct for advice - http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/contact

Edit -

Actually looking over the sales of good act you should be legally entitled for a refund/repair/exchange from where you purchased the original unit.

Exactly what happened to me, and I was rather angry about the whole affair. My first PS3 bricked from a failed firmware update. Replaced by Sony for free and then within four months developed a fault with the blu ray, wouldn’t play any discs.

Sony claimed my warranty for the PS3 I initially got from Tesco was no longer valid and I had only got three months on the PS3 that had a failed blu ray drive that was sent direct from Sony. I had in fact got a receipt with a remaining three weeks warranty, but Sony was having none of it. I demanded to speak to a manager, finally they agreed to me speaking to a manager.

I finally after numerous calls managed to get Sony to honour a new 12 month warranty on a replacement PS3 (which they claimed to me was a brand new PS3 and not refurbed unit) for £90 including delivery. I was very tempted to take the existing broken PS3 back to Tesco, however I accepted Sony’s offer and took the replacement who then sent me a replacement 40GB PS3 with a 12 month extended warranty. The PS3 came via courier and was boxed to which I had to provide the driver with my old PS3 – minus the drive. Which was a puzzlement as my replacement PS3 also had a drive in it. I dunno, Sony charged me £90 for a new PS3 which I felt was still in warranty for three more weeks. I did however get a spare 40GB HD and a new 12 month warranty, that has now sadly lapsed as the replacement is well past 12 months old, but what a business practice.

Sony make a decent games console, their customer service however really does suck. Keep complaining and calling, you might get something out of them, even if you end up paying for a discounted newer model.

ok all sorted....I can't believe they actually tried to do that, i checked the warranty book came with ps3 and it clearly said that any replacement unit is covered under rest of the warranty peroid...i phoned sony again and read it to the operator, he said i apologize and my colleague might have got confused with date of purchase and date of replacement, infact first he said you ran out of warranty then i told him the date of purchase, he put me on hold and after 5 mins of hold, he said ok we will replace it.....Thank God.....and thanks for your help guys

You can try, but they won't budge. You could try taking the PS3 back to place of purchase and see if they'll replace it otherwise as recommend you need to start quoting 'not fit for purpose' and see how far it goes.

I think the best you can hope for from Sony is a discount on a replacement (hopefully a new one if you're lucky) with a new 12 month warranty.

They claimed to me that the replacement PS3 I got replaces the one I sent back, and the warranty restarts for three months from date of replacement, regardless of it you have 11 months remaining on the one they replaced... On the plus, if your old PS3 died with only 2 days left, you then get three more months on the replacment, I think thats not fair, you should get three months on top of what is left on the existing PS3... I tell you Sony have a poor business model here.

wow nice one, didn't know that was written in the book that came with the PS3, handy piece of information that.

that must've have changed, as I remember ooh about 15 months ago when I got a replacement they wouldn't budge...

Lucky for you, so thats a result... All I just posted is now meaningless and you've got a new PS3 from the sounds it of.. Well done. That'll save you £130.

Yep, here it is in the back of the instruction manual,

"Replacement will be with a new or refurbished component or unit, at SCEE's option, which is guaranteed for the remainder of the the orignal Guarantee period"

Imagine how many people end up paying for a new system or refurb not knowing this because someone at the call centre tells you that your replacement isn't covered, I wonder if it really is to save money or just pure ignorance from the employees.

Wow that is worth knowing for many who've got a PS3 still under warranty. I wonder why I never noticed this when I was struggling, worse yet I had Sony send me a brand new PS3 and a 12 month warranty and yet if they made no mention of what the back of the manual says...

guess to them £90 was better??? I feel a bit sad now but least I got something in return for all the calls I made. Was like I said 15 months ago. And the 12 months extra warranty I got was piece if mind, but still. Rather not have forked out £90 when I still had three weeks warranty remaining.

OP did well and was smart and saved money. Well done.!!

seriously, i was shocked when he asked for £130, the most shocking thing was when he said, my original unit was covered for 1 year and replacement is only for 3 months, i was like, i only used my original console for like 4 months, BD-drive broke in April, so whats the point of having 1 year warranty....seriously they need to come up with less stupid excuse

sony is notorious crap when it comes to customer service. have had to deal with them for various bits. now i just don't buy ANY sony product except for 2 PS3s , which i did half heartedly tbh since these consoles are good when they work, but failure is just way too high imo. if the new console fails then i guess i will live without a PS3, since i am now done forking any more money to Sony. As far as a PS4, i will wait 1 year before i even consider it, to see if this time around they have resolved any poor manufacturing. I used to be a huge Sony fan, but not anymore.

at least microsoft did the decent thing in extending their warranty - i guess Sony are just too proud and arrogant to admit any faults on their end

Not being funny dude but the 360's hardware issues and failure rates are on another planet compared with the PS3's, the majority of 360's out there are pre-slim systems and I don't think many of them will last outside of their extended 3 year warranty (estimated to cost MS 1 billion dollars) which they we're forced into giving rather than doing out of the kindness of their hearts as people were getting class action suit started against them, which MS knows they would have lost and would have also proved that they sold a product knowing that it had a fundamental design floor.

1 year warranty is not enough....can i buy extended warranty at this point?

Not from Sony direct, I think they only offer that service in the states, over here you have to rely on the extended warranty offered at the place of purchase.
