It was working fine copying saves until I tried to change onto a different user account with the hope of deactivating the console from PSN, but then it turned off with the red light flashing which I think means its over heating... I left it for a while and it's back to YLOD now.

I may try again to see if it can last long enough to do the data transfer to a new console - but if it can't I at least have the saves I wanted. :)
 
This entire eBay PS3 reball is turning out to be a nightmare.

In mid December he claimed that his mother had passed so was tending to priorities, however he started a new listing (under his user name) for the same service!

Now he's disconnected his phone, he's ebay user ID is no longer in use and I'm seeing several other listings under a different name using the exact same title.

I opened an eBay dispute and eBay refunded me the service and shipping costs, but when I asked about receiving my PS3 they told me to contact the police. I have his name, number and some apartment address.

His eBay user name had been opened since 2002 so it didn't look phonie and he also had 100% positive feedback at the time. About 20 of those were for this service! So I've emailed him again, giving him 2 weeks to post it back. Hopefully he will but if I don't get by the end of the month I'll be filing a police report.

I'm not alone! - this linked thread is quite revealing.

What a shame. I just feel lucky that I was given the PS3 and didn't fork out $600 (that's how much the original owner paid).

that sucks trendlad, i mentioned this to the owner of the site i now frequent (gaming site i mentioned in previous posts), and he said if you want he'll run a story on it since he'll soon be writing an article on reballing systems anyway.

gam3r, did you get in touch with him?, was he able to help sort things out?
 
Normally I'd say sure to running the story, but this guy looks like he's been fairly decent until December (after reading through the linked thread in my last post). So it's best to leave it in case he wasn't lying about the passing of his mother.

I got home last weekend to find a big box on my doorstep, I picked it up and to my surprise it had DaggerPC on the box.

He had printed off a generic letter and taped them to the box. It practically said that the PS3 may or may not be fixed and he apologizes for the waste of time but has provided a full refund.

So essentially that's pretty cool. However, after reading through the linked thread there's a lot of people who have received a PS3 but it wasn't theirs! So cautiously I hooked up all the cables and tried to power up the PS3...

Nothing. Not even a blinking yellow light. The only issue it had previously was the YLOD, I know because I repaired it and it was fully functional until it overheated again after a few months.

So who knows if he sent my PS3 back, if it belonged to someone who re-flowed about 20 times and took no care about it, if it is actually mine but he just forgot to connect a ribbon. No idea.

When I get chance I'll dismantle and reconstruct it from scratch. I just hope it's something simple not someone else's PS3 with PSU issues or additional issues to the solder fissures.

At least I've got a PS3 back!
 
I went through every post in this thread and don't see any success stories. Since this thread was originally started, has anyone had any luck at all in getting the reballing done?

After a lot of research and after reading a lot of discussions, this company seems to be the most reliable and most professional.

I have not tried any of the temporary fix techniques. I don't really care about saved data and don't have a disc jammed in the unit. The unit will still perform the fan-test/eject with no problem. So when they receive it, I'm sure it will be filthy inside. :o

Should I even bother trying? Or just save up a little more and get a slim? Will the slim die on me in 4 years also?

Selfishly I'd love you to be the guinea pig and try that company and see how it goes. I've had mine sitting on my lab bench with the hope of one day re-balling.

Why did you find that company to be reliable?

PS: I started this thread to help people backup their lost data and retrieve disks. Since then I've tried re-balling options but that's a little deviation from the original YLOD fix intent. Be nice if I could edit the title to add [TEMP]

Completely understandable. I'm even partially tempted to just scope out bad joints myself and manually solder them. I'm just curious if any reball efforts at all have ever worked in the long run.

In all honesty it's really hard to get an account from people after they attempt a fixing method. Unless it goes wrong.

I've read threads discussing the re-ball process of processors and re-soldering of outer chips but it would have been really nice to hear from them a year or two later to see if it's still running.

Maybe if you do attempt it you could think of good old OcUK and repost the experience. It would be great if anyone read this and has experience.

After finding the highly likely source of the issue (lead free solder) I always looked at re-balling as the single most likely permanent fix.
 
I ended up getting a slightly-used (i.e. < 20 hours!) slim for $200. Now I'm trying to figure out how to safely nuke the other guys' account from it and reset it back to factory.

Still no other input on reballing. I'll just hold on to the old one for awhile and see if it can ever be salvaged.
