Apple has refused to repair an iPhone 4 on the grounds that it was used in an ambient temperature below zero, in breach of the specifications.

This rules out half of Europe and the US from using an iphone for several months a year lol. Are the iphone's built that poorly or are Apple now trying to fist you with both hands ?

I cant really add anythng of value to this apart from the fact numerous friends have an Iphone 4, and Ive lost count of how many replacements they have had! One every 2 months seems about the going rate! Hardly reliable for a phone costing so much.

Mine actually froze and stopped working when I was in Norway, delightful stuff.

It worked when it warmed up though :p

'Just avoid using it that way'

I've had phones freeze or turn off in the past in adverse conditions, never thought it would damage the handset though.

Do you think Apple are trying to shift their warranty responsibilities on to insurance companies ?

No, I think Apple just can't or won't (for cost issues) build a durable handset and so they go overboard with their T&C's and Warranty exemptions to save money with replacements/repairs.

I had something similar with my N95, o we won't cover it because of water damage. After ages of arguing, she used the excuse it could have been rain that caused it.

Great - I live in Scotland so I can pretty much never use my phone so why did you sell me a contract? To which she told me to send my phone back :p

I think Apple's profit turnover requirement is so high, they require T&Cs so strict so after-sale support costs are as low as possible, feeding into the "it just works".

oh and i reckon they went to apple acting all arsey about it because ive been in the apple store when 'upset' women have had iphone4s that they dropped and smashed replaced for free.

What, a woman was allowed to purchase an Apple device?

Don't they know they all get arsey when something goes wrong and it is the customer's fault?

Really? So the warranty can be voided and validated seasonally?

I interpreted it differently. It says "because it was used". That means even if you used your iphone 4 for two minutes outdoors this winter, you warranty is void forever.

i think mr-white agrees with you, in order not to void warranty half of europe and the usa (canada too i guess) would not be able to use the phone in winter, so its not that te warranty is seasonal, its that the phone is :D

I m guessing this includes all of apples products ?

quite shocking if you ask me also adds a bit of, errr confedense in apples products lol

probably only the ones that have built in temperature sensor + recording systems that apple can read the data from and reach such a conclusion....

Before we all jump in saying how apple suck, we don't know what HTC would do in this situation

Well actually we do with a small amount of research. I just looked in my Desire Safety and Regulatory manual and it says not to expose the phone to temperatures below -20 (with no extra caveats about whether it's in use or not). The iPhone specifies that it must not be used in temperatures below zero. Thats a TWENTY degree difference!

So in this case the woman in Norway would have been fine using an HTC phone in -12 degrees.

Pic from manual as proof etc:
