Intel LGA2011 Socket, X68 Express Chipset :D

I think providing the 6 core chips are considerably faster than the 2600k and still under £400 they'll still sell a decent number. The 8 and 12 core chips on the other hand are a different story...

OP if you do upgrade to lga 2011 SB, please sell me your Q9650 for a cheapish price :p. Now the 12 core SB seems to bring back the true upgrade power which core 2 series had over pentium 4:).
I hope those people who recently bought lga 1155 SB aren't gutted to see the phenomenal power of 12 core SB if it does give out monstrous performance.

I hope they are and I hope the 2nd hand market will have plenty of 2500k chips later in the year. :p

Only 32 PCI express lanes....

Thats pretty low. You cant even do full tri-sli/crossfire or have any other slots bar the graphics card and 1 4x slot from the southbridge unless the southbridge has some extra.

16 + 8 + 8 max is a step back.

Is it possible that 12 core SB may well end up as a server processor and not a desktop cpu?

More than likely, at least in the early part of LGA2011's life cycle.

If the AMD Bulldozer reports are true then all Intel really need is some mainstream 6 core processors and an 8 core "extreme edition", which I expect will be what the LGA 2011 line-up will be at launch.

16x/8x/8x isn't a bottleneck so no worries.

Well in 2-way SLI running at 8x/8x rather than 16x/16x only lowers FPS by about 2%, this is well known. Can't image 3-way suffers any or much more.

i know the last one was pretty badass, but it wasnt that great value, and im dubious about quad channel memory, unless u have a lot of cores to feed. recent memory test with sb showed minimal difference going from 1333 to 2133 :o

seems intel have gone for lotsa sockets, while amd is sticking with the same one more or less, for ages, kinda odd

32 PCI Express will probably be enough because they will be PCI Express 3.0 lanes (Source, near the bottom of the page). Double the bandwidth per lane. So the PCI Express "x8" slots will have the bandwidth of an "old" PCI Express x16 slot.

However I don't know how a graphics card built for 16x PCI Express 2.1 will behave in a 8x PCI Express 3.0 slot - will it run at PCI Express 2.1 x8 speeds or PCI Express 2.1 x16 speeds? That's a relatively unimportant question though as, I'd expect, the next generation of graphics cards (which might well be released at the same time as LGA2011) will surely use PCI Express 3.0 and those are the ones you'd be looking to buy at the time.

Who else is waiting for the LGA2011 chips ?

Personally can't wait for them that's my next upgrade path, what plans do you have for 12 cores, me personally for HD video processing and FSX (Praying can some how mod FSX to see all 12 cores).

Yup. I'm skipping LGA1155.

Obviously the 12-core processors will be out of my budget, but I'd like to think the 6-core ones will be in my league :).

My path is:
Socket 939 2.4GHz Dual Core --> LGA775 Q6600 --> LGA1156 i5 750 --> LGA2011

I personally don't really see the gain in going from Nehalem i5/i7 to Sandy Bridge LGA1155. Might aswell wait for Sandy Bridge LGA2011.
