hi everyone.

Like a lemon I have ended up with a old £20 note. has anyone taken one to the bank in the last few days?
I know they were still taking them after the deadline but i need to know about very recently as in yesterday. I know BoE takes them but that means post and hassle. Has anybody had any experience?
I know i will find out tomorrow but i would love to know right now. Any one?

Thanks in advance

I think the Bank of England will exchange them forever. Easiest way is to just carry it around and try and spend it somewhere. I doubt it would take more than a couple of days.

We still accept them and the bank hasnt rejected any from us yet.. Most places shouldnt have a problem accepting it. If they do, just try somewhere else, even a high street bank should accept them.

i feel a bit better now. although back in july alliance leicester would not take them and told me to go to lloyds (and its my bank!)t#**#@s
Anyway thanks for reply guys. what a forum. i love it

I recently deposited a tenner that was even older than the Edgar 20 pound notes and the bank was fine with it. It surprises me pleasantly how easy-going is the national bank on this issue. Other countries just give strict deadlines when changing currencies and people cannot do anything about it after that, even if the money they happened not use may be substantial for their livelihood. In the UK, on the contrary,I could come up with a pound from a century ago and it will still be taken(would have to do it directly in BoE though). Only problem is that I would get a current pound for it so obviously people would be the ones losing out on not utilizing money when it was worth something more.

Banks will take them forever IIRC.

Technically shops are allowed to accept them, most of them don't however as they can't keep them in the tills.

evening all

Took the note to lloyds today no problem and they took it without batting an eyelid.
Did not take it to my own bank (santander) as the last time they didnt take it.
So the moral is barring santander and the post office all the other banks take them and the BofE will take them forever.

Cheers to all who replied

Yep, pretty cool, especially when you're a 12 year old who just discovered a 40-50 year old £10 note. Sent it in and they sent me a nice shiny new one back.:D
