Lollipop lady dies after being hit by school bus

The traffic people near me seem to live in a world of their own where they think they can step out in front of any car and halt them with immediate effect.

They dont care if its in the middle of a junction, or for wet weather conditions.

Obviously this particularly lady seems to be pretty old and it seems like a tragedy has occured.

I pass through 15 minutes of school areas on the way to work in the morning, and as a result I pass probably 10 or so lollipop ladies.

Some as Nickg said live in a world of their own, and they just step into the middle of the road expecting everything to stop.

Possibly that's what has happened here.

I'm afraid I'm able to keep it in pespective. A very old lady has died, it's sad, but it happens. One of the comments says "Swift justice should have been dealt here, a bullet in the back of the drivers head."

I imagined a bit of a 'Canute moment' when I saw title...

But yeah, when anyone dies it is sad for the people that knew them :(.

In fact, I'm coming out with it.

I hate lollipop ladies. They have no respect for people getting to work in the morning.

They are supposed to be there to help young children cross the road safely. Why then do they stop all traffic on a very busy slow moving road because some fat 30 year old is just about to get to the point where they want to cross the road.

Why do they stand at the wrong part of the road - I can answer that one, because they kids don't bother walking to the bit of the road where the lollipop lady is, they just cross by themselves.

Why don't they wait until there's a few kids there - because the kids just cross the road themselves and ignore the lollipop lady.

For some stupid reason we have them at secondary schools, not just primary schools. If we're not letting 15 year olds cross the road by themselves because they can't be trusted, then what happens when they leave school?

It's all down to overspending councils and wrapping kids up unreasonably in cotton wool.

Finally this woman was 79 and the picture of her looks like any 79 year old woman I know. A very nice pleasant lady, but not one who should be controlling traffic.

Terrible shame, as are most accidents.

However, there are plenty here which are either on zebra crossings, or traffic lights.
What exactly is the point?

It's the culture that has sprang up in the past 40 years. When I was a kid and going to primary school there was ONE lollipop lady just outside the school. There were no others. When I went to secondary school I got the train there in the morning and crossed several roads without sign of a lollipop lady.

Now every single main road has several of them. Are we any better off?

Anywhere near schoolkids in the morning doesn't get past 15 miles an hour due to all the parked Chelsea tractors dropping off kids.

I'd say the hordes of parked cars near schools does far more harm to kids crossing the roads than legions of lollipop ladies ever could repair.

They aren't there to control traffic and parents should educate their children to use the lollypop man/woman rather than crossing if it's safer. It's not all down to the lollypop lady - do you want them to chase the kids around clobbering them if they dare cross without permission? :p

I don't mind them, but I do agree with your points about waiting until there's a few kids - I've seen lots of them letting one child across then 5 secs later just as one car goes past stopping traffic again because another one ran up to them.

The problem they have is that if they do wait, and the kids just cross the road on their own... kids will get knocked down.

Drivers see the lollipop lady on the side of the road making no movement to stop traffic. But a duimb kid jumps out and the driver is less likely to notice.

So I suspect many of them stop traffic so often because the kids are going to step onto the road anyway.

After consulting Steven Hawkings and my army of PhD friends, we have concluded the bus hit the woman.

I meant what caused the bus to hit the woman.

A bus driver isn't just going to plough the NO SWEARING who kept stopping him down.

You're assuming that's what happened though. She died from a head injury after the bus hit her. Was it just the wing mirror? Did it just bump her and she went over? It doesn't have to be a head on collision.
