What tech advances are you non-plussed by?

I don't get this one tbh.

Even in the heyday of CRTs, could you get a 32in, good quality TV for £300? Never mind a 50in for £550.

So in terms of value for money, I think modern flat screen TVs are good (not to mention all the new tech like 1080p resolution).

In terms of longevity - they may not last as long as a CRT, but 5 years is a pretty decent lifetime for a main TV.

As for power consumption - for such large screen sizes they are rather good, especially with modern LED backlighting.

Finally, one of the main benefits of these TVs is physical size and weight. Compared to a 30in CRT, a 32in LCD does not require a safety assessment to be moved and take up half of the lounge.

Not disputing any of that, apart from longevity. I would expect 10 years out of a TV personally.

Flat screens are finally coming down to a sensible price, as I said in my post, the latest screens are much better than the earlier models.

Definitley agree on the weight thing, but good luck to the burglars who want to take my CRT down three flights of stairs. I don't really have much call to move it once it's in situ so the heavy weight is not an issue for me, other than a bonus.

What is the power consumption of a recent 32" flat screen BTW?

SSd=Godlike
3d, slightly impressive but not anything compared to other stuff. Gives me headaches
Pvr, htpc is a much better choice
DAB, yes I agree it is very bad bit rate Roll on flac.

What is the power consumption of a recent 32" flat screen BTW?

Not sure about 32in, but this 37in LED backlit one I was looking at recently has a rated power usage of 147W.

Looking at this one, this 42in Philips - it boasts a typical power consumption of 84W.

However, I believe standard CCFL backlit LCD and plasma are more like 200-300W.

Air cooling is plenty good. Pointless.

I take it you have tried watercooling?

One of the best upgrade's l've done, when on air had a fairly quiet system FT01 case, the 180mm fans quit, H50 Viper/Apache > push/pull set up. Which was great cooling my CPU 4.2GHz but set at full speed 2000rpm it was a bit noisey when we had the odd hot spell last year room reached 23>24'c + plus the fan on my GPU 5870 (Overclocked) even set with a profile you could hear that.

So took the plunge, apart from better temps CPU / GPU wise no need to down clock when the weather is hot, the only thing l can hear is my DVD-RW spin up. The loop cost about £300 but was worth every penny the silence is great, have changed GPU to a GTX 470 overclocked to 850:1700:200 that use to reach about 75 > 80'c as the FT01 case has good case cooling, but watercooled 50'c > 470 with water block about £260 not that bad.

The intial outlay is costly but changing GPU + block is not bad as you can sell the old one, so keeping the cost down of the new one down. Plus l took into account l was going to keep this PC about 3 years with maybe one more GPU upgrade. So at the end of the day to me it was well worth it.

What do I need 3D for? Nothing.

Air cooling is plenty good. Pointless.

Smartphones
A £30 phone can call and text. Does anyone really need internet access on a phone. Are apps worth the £500 premium? Not in the slightest.

Tablets
It's not portable if you can't take it everywhere in your pocket. Tablets are useless for the same reason Netbooks are. Complete fad.

WiFi
Unreliable - always has been, always will be.

SSD
Good tech, I will buy into this when the price and capacity improve.

Wii/Kinect
If I wanted to move I'd go outside and play footballs. Consoles belong on the couch.

iTunes
Why pay for music?

Netflix
Why pay for films?

Twitter
Don't get it. Random bits of jumbled spam - haven't seen a conversation that made sense yet.

Kindle
Reading lol

Can't help but grin. Awesome post.

I'm going to add a few.

Texting Being able to text a message such as 'meet me at 5pm' fine. But if you use more than 10 texts per week it is just not a convenient enough medium for large amounts of communication and makes for boring people.

Apple Overpriced with a cult following.

Internet Should facilitate and enhance people's lives but it has become peoples lives

Mobile Phones For emergencies and conveying essential information yes. For annoying people to contact me when I'm not in work. No.

people who dont like advancement. Fine, ill accept things like DAB being worse quality, but most things have their place. Wireless sucks for gaming, but is awesome for mobilty and internet around at everywhere you go etc.

SSD's not having more people buy them so they become mainstream and as such cost a normal price.

Fans not coming with their own silicone gromets etc unless your paying £10 a fan.

Legacy stuff nto being dropped sooner, although I will regret this as my soundcard is PCI lol.

Cold cathode lighting not lasting for ever

UV liquid losing its glow.

Parts having built in short life spans due to our capitalist culture and if anyone made a product good enough not to need replacing then after an initial boom they would go out of business (light bulbs that last forever etc)

3D

Completely pointless if you ask me, overpriced & you look a complete Berk wearing what look like sunglasses in a darkened room, in order to watch said content.

Water Cooling
Air cooling is good enough for me. No point in doing this unless you are over-clocking, which I don't do anyway.

Smartphones
Dunno what I'd do without my Nokia E71.

Tablets
Unless you go for the really cheapo android ones floating around at the moment, they're overpriced. I'll stick with my netbook for portable computing thanks.

WiFi
I like it, but I'll stick with a wired internet connection to my everyday PC.

SSD
Best improvement to my PC in donkeys years.

Wii/Kinect
Not a games console person,so I cant comment.

iTunes
Handy for finding music you cant be arsed to go to the shops for.

Netflix
I prefer to own a collection of discs.

Twitter
Don't see the fascination TBH.

Kindle
What's wrong with going to the local library & borrowing a book for free

3D
The technology needs more work.

Water Cooling
Did this nearly 10 years ago, doesn't really have the "that's awesome" affect on me anymore.

Smartphones
Can't live with out mine. Currently temporarily using a Nokia that just phones and txts. I feel lost without email and apps especially sat nav.

Tablets
pretty pointless really, it's a device that sits between smart phone and laptop that no one really needs.

WiFi
extremely handy for mobile devices that doesn't require high bandwidth

SSD
Best improvement to my PC in donkeys years. <== this

Wii/Kinect
consoles are for kids who don't have a pc

iTunes
Worst software ever, avoid.

Netflix
internet is riddled with films

Twitter
For people who still think their life's interesting enough to tell everyone. Trust me it's not, we couldn't give a ****.

Kindle
If you read a lot these are useful, best non reflective screen on any device, extremely long battery life and requires no travelling to get the books. and I don't read lol

True but the assumption you are making is that people should want internet everywhere they go. And the assumption I am going to make is that most people waste time on the internet.

Wireless keyboard + mouse. I don't take them anywhere, they stay on my desk so I don't see how I would benefit from having them wireless.

3D Vision & Glasses - I'm still waiting for holographic displays to be in the living room.

CPU & GPU Watercooling - I just don't trust water :D (and I'm happy with my Noctua ND-H14 can allow me to overclock a 3.12GHz Duo to a 4.02GHz stable).

LOL 1080p is sooooo 2010.... and it was 1st shown in Europe 26 years ago was HD. Anyone remember the program "Tomorrows World" ? ;)

This is what I want now ;)

Ultra High Definition Television also known as Super Hi-Vision. (Resolution: 7,680 × 4,320 pixels (16:9) (approximately 33.2 megapixels)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7617702.stm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_High_Definition_Video

I remember that quite clear. They split the screen into 2 halves and put thick black bars on one half. They said if that side was SD, then the other half would be HD
