Got my new car last week. Wanted to get the efficiency model due to the rising fuel costs. Went to Sheffield today which was a 140 mile round trip and reset the mpg computer as I left the drive. Achieved 68.9mpg which I am well pleased with. I stuck to the speed limits pretty much (with 10 points I have to anyway) and did about three quarters of the journey on the motorway. It regularly hit 74mpg but with some hills to climb that brought it back down.

Will see how it performs this week with my normal work run.

Did you know that 68.9 MPG is exactly the official combined MPG for this car?

Very impressive economy for what is a 1495 Kg, RWD, 3 Series BMW that manages to sprint from 0-60 in less than 8 seconds, and can hit 142 MPH!

BMW have really led the way with effecient diesel engines and ED - it has the same combined fuel economy as a Ford Ka 1.3 diesel. Astonishing!

Must admit its a lot quicker than I was expecting. Its got half a tank and is showing 486 miles left. Happy days if true!

Have to say thats very impressive.

Would I be happy with a 4 cylinder? Probably not but you have one great advantage!

BMW will sell you a 6 cylinder version that neaaarly manages 50 MPG (49.6 MPG), and that one will crack 60 in 5.9 seconds and go on to cause the 155 MPH electronic speed limiter to engage!

If you cover a lot of miles I can see this making a huge difference in your outgoings, whilst not having to drive a gutless bluemotion piece of carp, or a Toyota Sanctimonious.

Brand new last week. I had a C220 CDI Merc before this and that got about 45mpg. Just got to get used to gears after having an automatic.

Nice co-incidence, but he wasn't doing combined driving though was he?

That's really quite impressive fuel economy nonetheless though.

I await the comments pointing out how many miles you'll need to do to save the money you spent on buying a new 320D as opposed to a used 335i though...

Don't forget, it's still a £28,000 car, and so the cost of purchasing/financing it is high. For example, even though I drove getting on for 30,000 miles a year in a car that manages 24.5 MPG on average, and my fuel bill is £500 per month, it would still be £190 per month in the 320d ED. A car that costs £350 per month less to buy is still a saving!

How does that compare to real MPG though. Will be interesting to work it out when you brim it again. Impressive numbers though.

:)

I have posted similar before except from my A3.

I have got over 6k miles on the clock of mine now and the economy is still as impressive. Mine is a company car so it saves me an absolute fortune on fuel in comparison to when I used my own private car. Not sure I would stump up the cash for one of these new myself and I do wonder how reliable these will be in 4 years time with the stop-start constantly working. Even after hard acceleration if I hit traffic the engine cuts out, can't be good for the turbo surely?

The most annoying thing with the recent weather is how long the engine takes to get some heat into it and warm the cabin up, but then I think the BMW closes the grill at the front to warm up quicker? So VAG could do with learning a thing or two to stop me freezing for so long on cold mornings.

Yeah but my finance is a fixed cost, road tax is £35 and fuel costs will be kept low so it suits me.

Yes, it is a coincidence - that's why I posted it. It's probably quite unlikely that he was driving exactly according to any of the driving cycles used by any measurement authority in the world, isn't it?

Probably quite a lot. More than you'd think.

Financing a used car is a fixed cost, too, and in fairness unless you don't drive very far road tax will be a small % of your total cost of ownership.

Bit of a threadomancy here but i've got one of these currently and struggle to get above 48.7mpg. No matter how light I am with the pedal or what kind of traffic/roads i'm driving in/on.
On flat motorway at 70 mph the needle sits bang on the 50mpg point.
Boot is empty, i'm in it alone and weigh about 80kg. No aircon or lights on.
Tyres are at correct pressures (think it's 2.8 front 3.1bar rear from memory).
I've had it in at the dealership and they say there's nothing wrong with it. Anyone else had one and found the mpg to be a bit on the low side?

I have the normal 320d Touring and I average 49.5mpg overall, but it has a fair turn of pace that I like to use. On a journey similar to that which the OP did I'll get about 57mpg.
