Problem I see with the original list is theres no merit to how a lot of those titles became popular in the first place... and the so-called magazine experts are tied to the apron strings of game developers, if they make a bad review, they won't get first dibs to look at new products
Couple examples without getting too carried away
Unreal Tournament should proberbly be placed higher, if epic supported/patched it better it'd still be widely played (ala original counter strike which still sees some form of support from valve)
Ultima Online should be up on that list, maybe one for the older games but if you played when mmorpg's first started showing up, you'll had heard about it. Similar story to UT... the developers did support the game, exept in the wrong ways (was originally a pretty hardcore dog-eat-dog gameplay that ended up carebear through ea's greed)
Final Fantasy ought to just be in that list as a series, as opposed to an individual title (and if it was, it would be 7, not 8) Its popular (albeit rare these days) enough to warrent a £50+ price tag for the original set of cds on the likes of ebay/amazon - I've seen mint condition boxes + the cd's go for £100+ ... good reason to dig around the bargain bin of cd/game shops actually if you use ebay
Could go on all day.... original post is a big reason why I stopped bothering with pc magazines long ago they feed people whatever they think they want to eat even if its tripe
All in all I would say don't take the official lists to heart because the harsh reality is your so-called experts aren't playing games recreationally, their doing it as a job, via set times...
Doesn't matter if you enjoy playing Doom or COD:BO if you enjoy playing it, who cares what the expert says
p.s. sensible soccer. Worms!
