The PSP2 to be as poweful as the PS3

The biggest challenge to the PSP and DS are the iphone and ipad.

They need to make it much easier and cheaper to develop games for the PSP.

What they mean is that the visual quality might be near that of the ps3 but obviously at much lower resolution.

The PSP was hyped to be as powerful as a PS2 too iirc.

If you look at the AAA titles for the regular PSP. You'll see that that it's pretty damn near it. I was impressed with Ridge Racer on the PSP, it looked like a PS2 game in my hands. Up until now the PSP has been easily the most powerful handheld in history

EDIT - Saw someones saying Tekken didn't, Tekken6 looked almost as good as the 360/PS3 versions!! I should know i wasted many hours to all 3 versions!

Even if it were possible to create a dedicated gaming handheld with the power of a PS3, is it really necessary...Honestly? Is there even a market for such a thing today? I don't see it, not when you look at the rate smartphones are progressing. Pretty much all my mates who game on the move do so on their iphones - I mean you're only trying to kill 10 mins whilst sat on the throne fgs.

the future of handheld gaming.......for people who dont have an iphone?

I think there's a market and who doesnt want games to look better?*

*Note: Better looking games doesn't mean I don't want awesome gameplay also, as it often seems to be the case if you advocate graphics it must be the only focus.

Personally, I want the PSP2 to be a 5-7" general use tablet with physical controllers that pop out the sides! :D How awesome would that be? The PSP phone (and a iPod touch like version without the phone) should be good enough for the the 4-4.5" market.

So they will produce 204 GFLOPS then? Mobile CPU seem to be some way off double figures in MFLOPS.

No idea about the theoretical single/double FLOPS performance but is it really relevant for gaming? + The 2nd gen snapdragon can hit over 100 mflops in linpack if you want benchies :p (that's not including the gpus potential either)

It's been taken out of context. It is not saying it has hardware that powerful, it is saying that it can produce visuals on par with EARLY PS3 titles due to the hardware it does have rendering on a screen of a small size.

Uncharted 2 isn't bad for a 7 series nVidia GPU hey.

Not just the iphone though is it? Even Sony themselves are jumping on the bandwagon.

Meh, I don't think adding dual sticks will do anything apart from making some games easier to play. If I want to play an FPS game, I'll play it on the PS3 or PC the way these games are meant to be played.

Agree.

needs to be 3d

No :|

You disagree, therefore I'm trolling? What?

The PS3 really isn't powerful in terms of graphics, it really really isn't. It has a 7 series nVidia GPU in it, come on!

Right, But do you expect the latest GPU from NVidia/AMD inside a handheld device? I get that the PS3 GPU isnt fantastic in the PC gaming world, But lets keep the thread with in the realms of whats achievable

What? When did I say that? why does it seem like so many people around here have so much trouble with replying to things I actually say?

When did I say I expect the latest AMD and nVidia GPUs inside a handheld? What I was actually saying is that it's entirely feasible for a mobile GPU to be able to handle graphics on a 7 series nVidia GPU level, I don't understand where the "latest nVidia/AMD GPU" came from.

It's seriously old in the "PC gaming world", it's seriously old from a technological standpoint all together, do you think technology has stifled so much that it's not possible to squeeze PS3 looking graphics in to a handheld? Bare in mind the fact that it'll be on a smaller screen, probably lower res and with lower res textures (obviously lower res texutes will look fine on a smaller screen) while maintaining a similar appearence.

according to engadget... so take this with a pinch of salt

apples next mobile devices will be using there A5 chip which contains a dual core GPU said to be 4x more powerful than the GPU inside the iphone4

sony are said to be using the same GPU but with more cores in the next PSP

right now if you look at games like inifinity blade , rage HD , real racing 2 you will see the iphone is already close to PS2 quality graphics (id argue the textures as being much better tbh) but at a much higher resolution.

so all in all the new psp should be able to do something good... it all depends on the developers
