Been there a couple of times... it's super sweet! The second time was as part of my European road trip thanggg - my friend managed to crash into a french guy who was driving his wife's car to the gym :o. He was really, really, really nice, though... the bump happened near his house, so we went back with him there to fill out details and ting. We went in through some underground carpark, which was über sketchy, like something out of a gangster film... but we didn't get kidnapped, so it was all good. He was really nice about it all, chatted to us about our plans, gave us tips about places to go, cracked funny jokes, spoke flawless English, and was basically just a legend... nothing like the rude Parisians you're all banging on about :p.

Psshtttttt, it's all about Fawlty Towers .

What's rare is wonderful (and ting!) :)

Me and the wife went to Italy for a holiday 18 months ago and stayed here in Rome:

Best hotel I've ever stayed in, easily and I stay in a LOT of hotels all over the world (3-5 *), and the breakfasts there are absolutely sublime!

Also ask for a room overlooking the pool and you get an amazing view of the city. We even got upgraded to an Imperial room and the room itself was just massive

It might be a little pricey but if you can afford it, go for it- even if it's just for a couple of days!!

Lol Well this is a kick in the teeth!

The gf is for sure fixed on Paris as she is convinced its cheaper etc i was looking into Rome :( printed loads off and went to a few agents too!

So going to re-read the thread and see what Paris can do

But i dont think i can make it a suprize :(

montmartre at sunset, bottle of champagne, couple of glasses. can't beat it.

Agreed!

I've been to Paris three times now and would love to go again! The people I've met there were also quite friendly - you just have to be slightly more polite with them than in other places, such as London!

If you worry about the French being snotty towards the British (particularly the English), you'll never go there and you'll be missing out on a fantastic city.

We stayed at the Hotel Luxembourg Parc on Rue de Vaugirard with a room overlooking the main road. Nice outlook, and a nice hotel. Good position next to the Luxombourg Park which should be lovely in April.

We went by Eurostar and paid the first class fare on the way over (free champagne and stuff) and it was worth the extra as there was a deal on at the time. Get a taxi from the train station to the hotel as it doesn't cost much.

We walked to Ile de la Cite, which has Notre Dame Cathedral (walked up to the bell tower!), then along the riverside to The Louvre (went in a different day). Walk along Jardin de Tullieres and had Croque Monsieur. Then walked up the Champs Elysees and up to the Arc de Triomphe. Then over to the Eiffel Tower. It was a long walk, but it shows that you can see a lot of Paris on foot in a day!

Paris is a wonderful city, but it would be good to plan for the places you want to see and be realistic in the time you have as it can be overwhelming, just like any other city.

I've been to Rome, Pairs and Prague all of which are romantic in their own ways, but Paris is Paris!

Some of the things we liked in the centre of Paris:

Notre Dame Cathedral and Ile de la Cite. This is where Paris was born. Full of history and a walk up to the bell tower is a must.

Eiffel Tower. Great view and great trip in the lifts to the top, but big queues. It's iconic and you have to do it!

The Louvre. See the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. You haven't been to a Museum/Art Gallery until you've been to the Louvre. It is enormous and you could spend days in there if you wanted!

River Cruise. Get on the boat near the Eiffel tower and travel up the river to the Ile de la Cite and back again. Nice to se Paris from the river.

If you have time to explore outside of Paris, go to Versailles. Buckingham Palace looks like a small mansion (which it kind of is) next to this place!

Try to eat at the restaurants, even if you just have French Onion soup, and try to ask in French as they genuinely appreciate it. Hard to find decent prices though.

I think you'll find that when asking for reviews of places there will always be people who have loved or hated it. Personally i found Paris to be a very nice city, i've never seen any of this dirt/rudeness and have been 3 times in the past 5 years. Well worth viewing the sights by walking everywhere if possible or use the underground though the main sights to see have been covered here already. Food was excellent as was the drink but it can be quite expensive (think last time i went a couple of years ago it was 17 euros for a pint and a half of beer), eating in the restaurants as mentioned is the best idea (though you do have to get the obligatory McDonalds Burger with a lager!). There are areas to avoid, i think the most intimidating was the 10e Arr, down the Bd De Sebastopol. If you buy a lonely planet or other guide book these are highlighted anyway. We flew in each time, very easy to get the train into Gare Du Nord from the airport station which is a 5 minute walk from the terminal.

Last two times we have stayed we were in the 5e or 6e Arr, the first time we went we got a hotel with a view onto the Arc De Triomphe, but sleeping was horrendous as i think it is the law to beep your horn as much as possible on that roundabout no matter the time of day!

Rome is also a lovely city, went there last year and stayed opposite the Pantheon which was very central. Lots to see and do. If you want to eat on one of the main squares be prepared to pay through the nose for at times not great quality (60 euros for 2 beers and a frozen pizza with chips!). The food overall wasnt as good as Paris, but eating/drinking out was probably cheaper if you avoided the tourist squares/piazzas. If you want to visit the Vatican then get there early, we headed across at 8:30am and still had to queue for about half an hour.

If i had to choose either place it would be a toughy, at present i'd probably go back to Rome but only as i've been there the once. I'd take a free trip to either in a flash! Other cities i've enjoyed recently are Madrid, Barcelona and Venice. For a summer break it's got to be Barcelona for around the time you are going either Rome or Paris.

Bring an ungodly amount of cash. It's probably one of the most expensive places I've ever been. A coffee and a pint in a nice little cafe off one of the main streets will cost you upwards of 12 Euros.

If you go to Rome, don't stay in the city.

I went in 2009 with the GF and i stayed here.

Frascati is a lovely little town with plenty of shops and the train takes about 20 minutes to Rome and it's dirt cheap.

The villa will drive and pick you up from the train station but it's about 30 mins walk which is quite nice.

My girlfriend (possibly soon to be ex) is French, so i've been to France quite a few times. Lyon though not Paris.

All i can say is be prepared to PUSH.

People try to get onto the metro even if you are getting off.

Also they have no sense of Queues, as many other countries.

LOL! I'll second (and third) that! I saw a chocolate eclair at the Louvre underground station for 15 euros! It was a simple chocolate eclair...honest.

Actually, maybe it wasn't a simple chocolate eclair...maybe I should have bought one...dammit! :D

Well thanks all! We shall be doing some research over the weekend and book something :)
