Ever walked out of a job?

I've never walked out of a paid job, but I did once with a voluntary job.

I was studying computer science A-level at school, and I volunteered 1 day a week at an independent computer shop. I did it with the intention of experiencing some hands-on repair work, visiting customers with a technician, setting up their PCs etc. Most of the work given to me was just of a clerical nature in the end. That I didn't mind too much, because it is always good to have office experience when you're a teenager. One day though, they took the Michael: the boss asked me to go down to our nearest railway station (Severn Valley Railway in Bridgnorth), which locals will know have some pretty steep roads going back to High Town. What was I told to do once I got there? To collect a chair. Yes, a chair (one of those Mastermind-type chairs). Then carry it (no casters fitted then) for the 1 mile back to the computer shop in High Town. (and no car for me as I'm visually impaired). So that was my last day there, and I then sent them a letter basically telling them where to shove it.

Does not working your notice due to new employer wanting you to start immediately count as walking out?

Walked out on factory work , at first i was stacking 1 belt , one week the main women team leader was off and this idiot manager told me to stack 2 belts , plus go get emtpy pallets, i said this is stupid , (he said are you calling me stupid, i said no this is stupid), and just headed home...

nice thread btw, it's good to read about people's experiences

Back when I was 17 I was working at a Pizza Hut, we had this god awful support manager who did nothing but moan and treat staff like dirt. One morning it was me and her doing the open shift, she was ranting and raving and asking me to do to much stuff I just couldn't do.

So I grabbed my gear and walked out, it took her 45 minutes to realise I was gone. She sent me a text asking me if I had gone to Mcdonalds and asked If I could get her something. I replied telling her what I had done and that I didn't want to work there any more.

2 weeks later I was still jobless, but I then found out she had been sacked due to stealing small amounts of cash from the safe and giving her mum(!) the keys to the place to pretend to be a manager when the police got called out one night due to a false alarm so she could go out clubbing.

Afew days later I went back in and spoke to the store manager, since I was always flexible, worked the day shifts and never said anything bad I got my job back.

Only for me to quit 4 months later for a better job. :p

They microwave all their food right?

Not everything, stuff like curry's, lasagne's that kind of thing are. Everything else is in large frozen packs. They do keep a tight shop for cleanliness to be fair, well the one I worked in anyway.

walked out of a call centre I worked at when I was 18, was there a year and a half.

I was off on a public holiday (it was scheduled on my rota as stat day) and they had the audacity to take it off me as unpaid unauthorised leave. Well, when I found out... I went through the roof. I marched up the call floor and spoke to the Operations Manager as I wanted this sorted. He just sat staring blankly at me so I went and sat down but refused to work. I put myself on a comfort break (I was allowed max 10mins a day) and the Operations Manager came and spoke to me about 90mins later and asked why I was still in 'comfort break' status. I told him that I refused to work until the issue that I had with the leave thing was sorted and he just stared blankly at me again so I said f it, I'm outta here, I quit. You're a *** (worst curse word probably :)) and so's everyone who works for the company.

Never went back and got a letter 7 days later asking if I had left. WTF!

Was out of work 7 weeks but it was a good thing as it actually pushed me into a job (Travel Agent) where I was able to start my career which I wouldn't have been able to do before in a call centre :). I wouldn't leave without a job now though, too many responsibilities.

I walked out of a god-awful job. Best bit was, the HR department were so pants, I actually got 2 full paycheques after I'd left! Score! :D

Yeah, but it was Pizza Hut and I was at College.

Manager had a go at me for dropping a Pizza fresh from the oven. So she had a good old moan at me and took over, she dropped one straight away.

I then had a massive rant about doing this for 4 hours and only dropping one.

I was only 16 and it was a rubbish job. The other manager who was a lot more reasonable and not a stress head told me to go and chill out for a bit. I went to chill out for 30 minutes then didn't go in the next day.

She was a right plank and that was the straw that broke the camels back :)

Yes started on a small site with wimpey the lads that had been working for them for years were so boring no banter didn't want to do a tap and the foreman was a tit so jacked after 3 weeks. Started for another firm 2 weeks later and got 8 years work from them so was worth it.

I had a temp job many many yrs ago for all of ten mins.. Actually turned up for my first day, had a lecture from some ****, who was supposed to be my supervisor. I guess I just didn't appreciate, I'm the boss and you do what you are told, attitude that was being presented to me. So like a cheeky git that I was back then, I said ok so where do I start? I take it here, pointing at the fire exit, for which i promptly got up and walked out of. It was a long time ago, but i still remember the good feeling I had jumping in my car and speeding off !

I was unfairly dismissed from my first job, and whilst fighting my corner in the surprise "you're being let go" meeting, 6pm after a full days work I just thought "to hell with this", told them they could keep their job if that's how they want to treat their employees.

Few arguments erupted and I just walked out. They had a cheek to say I was being made redundant so I could claim job seekers.. Errr ok. Never persued it because I was young and didn't really feel the job was worth it.

At my current job I've walked out the office on one occasion when my boss queried my hours for 1 day when I clocked in at 9:03, when I used to stay every day for a minimum of half hour, despite being on a wage (not getting paid for that extra time).

Got so worked up I knew that if I didn't walk out and calm down I'd have told the boss to do one and probably chinned him. When I did return he was all apologetic, but since then I've just learnt to ignore him and do my own thing.. And now I arrive at 8:58 and leave at 5:00 to prove a point.

Got a job knocking on peoples doors asking them to set up a direct debit to charity. Told the guy at dinner time it wasnt for me and went home

Yes and when I was doing my engineering apprenticeship with a place i've been with for 3+ years. One of the most retarded things i've ever done to be fair. Can't even remember what it was about but I stormed out of work and got a letter the next day from the boss. Came in and we had a chat, didn't get any sort of disciplinary from it though, can't even remember what it was about, needless to say I stayed there for 2 more years, finished off my apprenticeship and got a new job elsewhere.

I bet they are watching your every post on here.

You'd be surprised. I used to work for their support wing and "bringing the company into disrepute" is definitely one of their favourites. Couldn't post anything about them anywhere without some plank reporting it to some jumped-up supervisor.

My team leader, one of the most down to earth and reasonable people you could expect in that company, was disciplined for his facebook status, of all things.

I walked out of two jobs when i was cheffing years ago.
The first was when we'd ran out of bread and the hotel manager made me walk into town to get some, despite him having transport. I got the bread, put it in the kitchen went home and never went back, which dropped them right in it as it was mid-season and almost full (90 guests). What made it worse was my missus was the restaurant manager !!
Second time i was working in another kitchen and just grew tired of the Head Chef's constant boasting/done everything/been everywhere attitude......halfway through knocking up the Tomato soup i took off my whites chucked them at him and walked out the back door. :D

Was really tempted to walk out of one job but bit my lip and handed in my notice in the 'correct' way for fear of getting a crap reference.

I got a crap reference anyway which infuriated me no end as I had gone about things with the upmost professionalism depite been treated like an oily hand rag. Were it not for my family I would have taken the 'Castiel' approach :p

They had a cheek to say I was being made redundant so I could claim job seekers.. Errr ok. Never persued it because I was young and didn't really feel the job was worth it.

On this occasion you didn't need it, but it is a mercy of sorts. If you'd left of your own volition you wouldn't have been eligible for jobseekers.

I've always said to the boss - I've had enough, I'll start looking for something else. Usually within the month I've found something and handed my notice in.

I don't think my previous post was clear..

They pulled me aside for an incident, which they deemed gross misconduct. Can't really say what it was but needless to say I was shocked and infuriated to have this thrust on me out of the blue.

The "meeting" was held at 6, when everyone went home so I had no representation and it turned in to a slagging match. At one point the boss threatened to kick my head in, so I just told him a few home truths and that I didn't want the job.

As I walked out they were making snide comments about putting it down as a redundancy instead of a sacking, so I could claim. Not that I had any problem with money at the time but it was more the "haha best you get down the dole" attitude that wound me up.

I'd rather have been sacked for nutting the chairman than the story they made up to get me out the door. In fact, thinking back they would have been in a world of pain if I'd gone the unfair dismissal route, as they promised to keep me on if x y z conditions were met, some 2 months before then when x y z happened and they changed their mind I thought "they'll just find a reason to get rid of you, is it worth it?"

Ahhhh ranting again :o
