Right, I have been using my iPhone normally, and I have hit the 500mb cap 2 months in a row now. 500mb is clearly not enough for a smart phone like the iPhone.

So I need to get away from O2! The 2 networks that interest me are Giffgaff and 3mobile because of the unlimited internet data they offer.

At the moment I'm in the middle of an O2 iPhone 4 monthly contract. But my wife should have completed her contract, so in theory could cancel it. So I was thinking would it be possible for me to cancel my wifes contact and move her mobile number to my sim and continue that contact. While I migrate my number to Giffgaff or 3mobile?

Or if that didn't work I guess she could just cancel her contract, take my sim and number. I just get a new sim and number for Giffgaff or 3 mobile. Only problem being hers is a iPhone 3Gs and wont take a micro sim! Arggghh...!

Other question I had was do 3mobile support visual voicemail? Also is the internet really unlimited on these 2 networks? As that is the main point of moving for me.

Also what's the best way to put in a complain to O2? People should make sure O2 know that 500mb per month is rubbish.

Thoughts or ideas people?

You should probably consider investing in that new fangled technology called WiFi, I hear you can even get it at home now! :)

Is anyone on the simplicity plan from before the 500mb cap was put into place? I got a text ages ago saying I will be moved to a 500mb cap but iv gone over that a fair few times now and never had a text or email.

T-mobile might still do 3gb per month, not sure but I remember OFCOM investigating them about it a week back.

I tried changing my number with orange once, they said its the equivalent to cancelling the contract so you have to pay. Cheapest option seems to be to get a bolt on. I think 02 knows 500mb is useless and so uses it as an incentive to make you pay more for a bolt on. On the bright side maybe more wifi hotspots or openzone will pop up over time so 3g wont be needed as much.

Can't you just ask for more bandwidth and pay the extra?

When at home the iPhone is always on WiFi. Office does not have Wifi, and when out and about on site there is no Wifi. Basically I only get Wifi access at home. I find it amusing how O2 tell me that they provide me with free Wifi which I can use at home. Err no, I pay for my broadband connection its not free, and its not a free hotspot.

As above really. Also I do not trust O2's data meter. I will be closely monitoring how much I think I am using compared to what they say next month.

Anyway is it possible to juggle mobile numbers about like I suggest in the first post?

Never really got close to my TMobile limit of 500Mb but I use Wifi wherever I can and try and limit browsing on the phone if I can. That said, it is annoying that despite the fact that TMobiles "booster" facility is excellent, it can't be used to change your months booster to unlimited internet for the iPhone.

I use an app called Dataman to monitor usage, not sure how it compares to the providers numbers but it seems quite accurate so far :-

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dataman-real-time-data-usage/id393282873?mt=8

It can be set to give you alerts as to when you go over your daily and weekly allowance so you know you may need to throttle back a wee bit on the usage. ;)

Currently have CallPlanpro and iDataMonitor - but I think its messed up currently as I changed my billing date. So hopefully next month will be more accurate.

Reason I think things are strange is that my iPhone usage setting reported ~680mb for a the period from mid November to 8th Jan. So how can I be hitting 500mb for both months (1000mb)?

pr0n?. :p :D

Seriously though, 500Mb isn't a fat lot per month to be honest, wouldn't really take long to wade through that if you aren't using wifi hotspots etc. According to Dataman, I've got 20 days left to the end of my billing cycle and I've used 9% of my monthly allowance already. Thats just with casual web browsing and email.

How on Earth are you using 500Mb/month at work and "out and about" ? Seriously I really wanna know.

I don't know tbh. But had one week recently without broadband due to waiting for new router - that probably didn't help.

If your with BT broadband there are BT hotspots all over the country where you can use them for free :) Just gotta download the app to connect.

Granted that doesn't help if your not with BT :p

That all said I must say I have never EVER come anywhere near my 500mb limit tbh. You should check how much you do use and you can get a bolt on for extra data usage for like 5 quid extra a month or something like that.

Edit:

Just looking at my account it says:

Data allowance

You have unlimited UK data for browsing.

WIN !!! This is on o2 by the way paying 30quid a month for iPhone4 :D

Yes, I went on Simplicity 20 ages ago. I've had no texts or any contact telling me it was changing and the o2 app still says 'unlimited'. I've used a total of 1.5Gb since I got my iPhone 4 on launch day.

i go over the 500mb on my o2 allowance.

Its usually the app downloads that do it.Need to learn to save them for my wifi at home.

I've gone over 500MB a month.
It's Apps that does it for me. If I go to the App store and there's 20 needing updating it can be quite a lot of data usage - only takes a few of them to be 10MB and could be hitting 50-100 MB.

Wait for O2 to contact you, or add more data. I'm with vodafone atm and if I go over my data it's £5 for 500mb extra, which seems reasonable and means I'm not paying extra for months when I don't go over.

That's a lot of apps, especially considering the limit is 20Mb over 3G.

i can download 2 or 3 of them in a day easily if i'm trying new free games out.

thats 60mb gone in one day, do that 1 day a week for 4 weeks and thats 300mb gone out of 500mb.

Easy done.

Its the games that are the biggie downloads. Its just about learning to change your habits. Downloading free games is something that can wait till your at home on wifi.
