More book burning..

For the record, I am against Koran burning and all violence whether religious or not. However I don't think that burning the Koran should be illegal in this country.

I'm not 100% clear on whether burning a religious text in a "peaceful" manner (ie: without jumping up and down shouting abuse) is a crime or not in the UK, which is what I was clutching at earlier, really.

If it's automatically assumed to be a hate crime over here, then it strikes me that in the US, you'd in theory, be fine to do it under the First Amendment as long as it's done "peacefully" and in a safe manner. FTR I'm not purposely digging at one single group here, people of many different nationalities and beliefs have burned flags in parliament square in the past as part and parcel of protest. I'm just struggling to see why it's so massively different. derp.

Not really, as the crazy people can finally be sectioned and given the help that they need

And the rest of us can just carry on as normal without the crazies that believe in magical beings

How do you mean? That you think burning a Koran is OK as long as no-one is burnt or that being arrested for burning a Koran is OK unless the penalty for doing so is being burnt?

Yeah it's just a book. No different to me burning a copy of Hello magazine. The symbolic meaning is entirely dependent on you as an individual. To me it's just burning paper. That would apply if it's a bible or a flag or a twig.

I thought we were a free country. Is there anything else that's illegal to burn as well a Koran?

You can't ban religion it has been tried before and failed, imagine if someone passed a law making religious belief compulsory could you adhere to it? That is exactly the same situation for someone who has a religious belief it is not something that can be turned on and off like a tap and certainly isn't something that makes someone certifiable.

Man kind has a way of finding something to argue and fight about be it land, money, food or oil religion has been used as an excuse for many but is not very often the cause.

Where in the article does it say he was arrested for burning the Koran?

He was arrested for racially agrevating behaviour which would be the same for someone burning the bible in a town centre. Had he chosen to perform the burning privately in his own home instead of being an attention seeking idiot I doubt the police would have been notified or interested.

Muslims aren't a race though.

Treating religious belief as any other delusional belief is all that is needed, where people are given therapy and drugs to helps them recover from their mental illness

I'm pro banning religion, would sort all the issues

Wouldn't work, along with anything else that goes against the basic human nature and genetics. Now if they invented some sort of gene therapy that stopped people feeling spiritual, it might work.

Most people that claim to be non-religious have really just swapped overt religion for something more opaque, like political correctness to fulfill their "god spot".

My brain cogs are clunking away here... Will I be arrested if I go and burn a load of L.Ron Hubbard books in a brazier in Trafalgar square?

You'd probably be arrested for causing a public nuisance or breach of the peace (although the terminology might be slightly different in English law) if nothing else - it's a fairly handy catch-all type thing that you can apply to almost any situation where you don't want someone to continue doing what they're doing.

Burning books is pretty pointless as far as I'm concerned as there are few books so bad that nothing can be learned from them (even if it's just not to read another one of the author's books). If you don't like it then why get it noticed on such a wide scale? Generally speaking out of sheer bloody-mindedness I'm more likely to read a book that people want banned than I was before it got mentioned - that's not necessarily a massive jump in the likelihood of me reading it but it's a definite increase.

I haven't, the only thing filling my "god spot" is wanting stuff to be done correctly and on time without wasting money

Political correctness which has become the defacto quasi-relgion of the UK is just as delusional as any traditional religion.

  • Swap God for the state
  • Swap satan for hitler
  • Swap priests for politicians
  • Swap witches for racist, homophobes and right-wingers and other NAZIS!!!
  • Swap blasphemy for questioning any of the tenets of political correctness - racial equality, global warming, education (indoctrination), the size of the public sector (the church), etc.
  • Swap the ridiculous ethos of "Jesus forgives", for "everyone is equal".
  • Swap the mythical Jesus heaven for a PC fantasy land where everyone is 100% equal, there is no conflict, crime, racism, poverty, or pollution.
  • Come up with thoroughly dubious "scientific" arguments about how we are killing the earth and how everyone is 100% equal no matter where they evolved, just like christians come up with "science" to refute evolution or anything else that doesn't fit.

The rules are enforced by the government and the media and society in general just like a religious state.

When something bad happens in the UK people cry for the government to do something, the same way people cry for allah or jesus. They look to the state to take care of their lives completely just like god takes care of people. A bunch of pathetic people wringing their hands and crying to the government.

Then the politicians (priests) come out and say they are going ban this or that, or start some new commission or committee, and everyone sighs with relief.

I think that is accurate, broadly.

Do you think I would get the same attention if I burnt an entire set of Twilight novels?

Most likely yes, if you did it in the same manner. As has been said already do you really think he was doing it as quietly and peacefully as possible, or do you think he was trying to create a scene?
