Just recieved my ocz 120gb bigfoot installed windows 7 64bt. My motherboard is a gigabyte ud5 with latest bios.
What are the does and don'ts of ssd's and whats the best way to maintain performance. Things like do i disable defrag and ho doe's trim work ?

Trim is automatically enabled in Windows 7.. but you'll need to enable AHCI is the BIOS to get the best use out your new drive.

To check is trim is enabled/disabled:

Command prompt > fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

fragementation still occurs on SSDs so you'll still need to occasionally defrag.

Don't defrag!!

I'm getting a SSD soon and was aware that you shouldn't defrag as this severely degrades the drive, plus the seek times are so low it doesn't become an issue.

I'm pretty sure Windows automatically disables defragging on an SSD anyway. You should not defrag it and to be honest I dont think you really need to. I think I read somewhere that if you leave your PC idle for a while it will start to 'reorganise' itself to be more efficient anyway, or something like that.

Serraph - Thats what I was aware of when I bought mine; even on well-established defrag programs (including free defrag programs which is all you need), it shouldn't list a SSD drive for scheduled defrags. Always check to make sure its not listed or ticked.

When you talk about the drive optimising itself, my assumption is that's to do with Trim garbage collection so the initial 100% performance doesn't decrease too much from that. To aid this you can also logout and to minimise any activity and the drive will be reliable and fast for many more years.

May not be much more to it than that but keep on top of any firmware updates that are released regularly.

Woh!

I am looking into buying an SSD too

Which is true?

Don't do it. As someone else (on these forums I think) logically pointed out, due to the wear levelling algorithms that are designed to increase the lifespan of the drive, the only thing you'll probably achieve it to move files that are scattered across the drive, to other randomly scattered locations.

Just install it, use it, and don't worry too much about it.
