£300 to spend on a home weight setup.

Yeah, I was chuffed! :) Even has the proper spin lock 2.5kg collars to boot! Exactly like these bad boys:

Good work! Few good deals for people in south east on eBay atm.
Something like £200 for 220kg of oly weight!

These are designed for olympic lifts, such as power cleans where the barbell would move up and down very fast, and hit the floor.

And for very heavy weights where a tilt of the barbell would force a normal sprung collar to give way.. we're talking 300kg territory.

These collars are a bit of a pain to use because they take a while to put on and take off. For novice level use, a sprung collar is much better,

Btw this isn't a spin lock. A spin lock is those incredibly cheap and useless barbells kits that have a coil end, and the collar is simply a large nut that you screw on.

Powerhouse used to do a nifty little stand which was red & black. Adjustable in width so you could use dips. Also height adjustable for squatting (has catchers too). Can get a bench in there and voila. Chinup bar and some adjustable DB's, barbel & eights and you're sorted.

Win right there.

whats the build quality like on those?? are they sturdy?

I had a second had squat stand similar to those, put 140kg on the bar and started to worry that the whole thing might collapse becasue it was wobbling like crazy.

rated at 250kg. thats not bad tbh. I'd be complaining and wanting refunds if it was bending at 140!

for £200 more he could get a powertec power rack, which has a pull up bar, dipping bar, and the option for a lat pulley attachment in future.

the powertec rack is also rated for 1000lbs. i know thats over budget but its a lot better investment and future proof. if he went second hand he could maybe get lucky and find a power rack for £200, also making it a lot better deal than those squat stands.

yeah thats a fair comment tbh. its worth spending the extra in this case unless space is really at a premium

im amazed at the amount of people that think building a home gym or training at home is cheaper and easier than joining a gym.

once you start adding everything up, little things like a heater, music system, matting, etc can go well over £300.

dont even wanna start about dumbells, i have 1kg to 45kg set now, as you can probably guess im flat out broke after buying them and will probably need to buy more in future.

those dumbells alone will be worth a fortune surely!!

they are, buts its a great investment, i use them all the time, my bro (14) will start in a few years. then when i have kids in the future, they will hopefully grow up and use them, i look after all my equipment, so it should last for a long time.

i could really do with the money right now, but i know if i had the money instead of a gym, i would be a lot worse off health wise, health > money.

i have been waiting for the cold weather up here in scotland to go away so i can, wash, sand and brush the equipment i got recently and then paint it. i will do before and after shots, so you guys can see the difference it will make.

hopefully be able to do it next week some time. but i doubt it, probably take months.

I think the stand I linked has dipping bars on the back. I agree a full rack would be a much better investment but is probably overkill for the OP's needs.

OP posted on sep 2010.. :S

And zero followups. What does that say?

I have to concur with Psycho Sonny

I bought my gym a year ago, and I thought 750 is about two years gym membership, and I can have a gym for life. It's surely an investment!

It actually costs more than you think. Sooner or later you will need to use more equiment.. I wired my garage up with electricty to fit fans during the summer and heating during the winter.

I bought some kettlebells, extra thermal wear, dip attachments, upgraded the bench etc

I'm thinking of buying bumper plates soon which will set me back £150 a pair for 20kg's

It's definatley not cheap, but if you're into lifting you will need to build your own gym so you can use up the rack for as long as you want, whenevr you want.

Most gyms close early on weekends.. And most of the ones I've been do dont have adequate squatting facilities.. Both the gyms Ive been to have 1 squat rack.. And I tended to do 5x5 which takes a long time to finish. So there's like a que of people just staring atr me while I do my workout.

bumper plates? why? just why?

just use normal olympic plates and make sure you have decent matting, bumper plates are a complete rip, they do look cool though.

i dont think i will ever need a fan or anything for my home gym (its always freezing in scotland), should be moving house this year, and if the next house has a double garage it will be converted into a gym (probably cost £10K to get it all done properly) or if its just a single ill be getting a extension added onto the house. I would obviously prefer the extension route and build another room above it, but then the size of the land will come into play.

garages dont have the same finish as houses, my current garage doesnt have a completely flat floor, so some stuff rocks slightly but its quite big for a single garage, i reckon its like a large single. therefore theres a lot of thought needed into the conversion process. i think i will have it 100% matted, since i found a website doing cheap horse stall mats.

i think there should be a home gym thread (which only has pictures and home gym discussion allowed, bit like the supplements thread), that way newbies can take one look at it then decide to just get a gym membership, i find myself posting the same stuff on a regular basis and most people have no clue how much money it costs and think a couple of hundred quid should do after looking at an argos catalogue for 5 minutes.

A home gym sticky sound like a great plan. I'm half way through building my own at the moment, and while I'm not one of these people that feels they have to have all sorts of fancy, specialist bits of kit and accessories, I've still spent over 300 getting the basics together.

Anyway, that sticky with other peoples pics would be great for inspiration to get mine finished. I've vowed never to go back to a gym because if I ever again have to stand around for half an hour, waiting on a rack while some little kid does 10 sets of 50 squats with and unweighted bar, while his 15yo mates try to tell me how they're going to gain 4 stones of muscle before they go to Magaluf in the summer, I will hurt someone!:D

My squatting setup at home cost me just shy of £1k. Powercage, pulley attatchment, dip bars, 240KG odd in plates, oly bar matting, weights tree. I then brought a bench which was on offer later down the line. I can't make use of the pulley due to space but it's waiting to be used.

Money well spent. When I move out I'll invest a little more and train entirely at home providing I have the space. With things like gym equipment it's better imo to up your budget and get decent quality gear than flimsy poorly produced equipment and end up buying twice and spending more money in the long run.

lol you guys will never guess, i went to a local pub/restaurant for a meal with family and friends for my cousins birthday tonight. i wasnt drinking and neither was he (he has a home gym too) but everyone else was (about 11 of us) and we met some old friends in there, and one of them is getting his garage cleared up and renovated and yes he wants to build a home gym. since he had seen my cousins home gym, he had done some research of his own, he then asked my cousin how he picked his stuff since he was recommended power racks (my cousin has the powertec leverage system aka yellow monster) and he basically said, your better off talking to me since it was me who actually told my cousin what to buy. after half an hour of chatting, he basically want me to come round to his house and see the space he has and what would work and what wouldn't.

so i think ill create a home gym thread on monday (i have another family function tomorrow) omg, just realised i went crazy on the food tonight because its been ages since ive ate out and thought might as well go all out and with the party tomorrow as well, oh god all the good work of the past month is gonna be gone.

i had 3 courses (big ones too) starters were a combo of wedges, haggis fritters, chicken kebabs, pork kebabs, garlic bread, spring rolls. main course was half a steak inside a fancy bread, basically a fancy cheeseburger with fries. dessert there was a chocolate peanut butter thing but they had run out so had to go with sticky toffee pudding with custard.

tomorrow theres gonna be lots of fried food all indian, samosa's, paneer rolls, etc. looks like im just going to have to make good use of my gym to make up for it all.

if somebody else wants to start it off go ahead i wont take offense, otherwise ill do it on monday.
