Is this desperate?

intel burn test, passmark brun test, and google stessmypc good little program. passmark can test hdd and other things like gfx cards so if you let it do everything at once that will prob do it lol.
msi kombustor as well for gfx.

I'd be wary of trashing the old PC, they might just replace it with a £250 laptop to help you with your studies :)

Word 2007?

I'm back on 95 here

Sounds like a plan, especially with photoshop - any other programs to run at same time as a torture test?

run a couple of stress tests< and change the priority of them in task manager to high, that'll make your computer run office/photoshop etc run even slower...

Make a bet with them: You spec the PC, pay for it and do no play games till the end of the semester: If you succeed they'll give you some of the money back and let you keep it agreeing on some gaming, otherwise they'll keep the bugger. From what you have written you seems to be able to refrain the urge of playing video games so you should be able to win that one hands down.

The trick is to take their proposition and to make it yours with adding that clause about self control. This way you are presenting it as a agreement/contract, showing at the same time that you are the adult you claim to be. And keep hammering that underpowered computer is a plain pain to use: it is counter-productive.

On a side note you could be sneakier a build the PC without a powerful GC, so when they fill their part of the bargain, you'll cash to spend on a nice GC.

Just throwing a couple of ideas.

You say you have a job, so the only thing to suggest now is to GTFO of that prison cell TBH.

If thats too drastic for you, then as preveously stated, going out on the lash, not letting them know where you are and generally acting like a "Kevin + Perry"
will surely do the trick as letting you get a PC is the better of two evils for them.

They are taking this "looking out for your intrests" way to far, not letting you let your hair down etc will actually be worse for studying as you're probably aware.
taking unreasonable to the max as it's not like you want to buy a submachine gun or an M1 Abrams tank FFS. :(

...............hmmmmmmmmmm??? Submachine gun eh? :D

What is your current pC spec?

I would say dishonouring what your parents say is a bad idea, thinking back to when I was 18 my parent slet me spend money on pretty much what i liked (as long as it wasn't drugs etc!).

And not Im hopelessly bad at budgeting and keeping track and restrained with money etc, Im not blaming them, but it certainly didn't help me.

I would say overclock your processor and GPU just to get the most of it (As you say you want to recycle most of the parts anyway) and just wait until your a bit older and have moved out OR your parents are a little more leanient. If you dishonour them and they find out it will not go down well and they'll be more strict in future

Current specs are:
P4 @ 3.2 (highest o/c I ever got out of it was 3.5GHz)
Asus P4C 800E Deluxe mobo (flashed to latest version)
1GB DDR PC3200 ram (shocking cheap stuff, thanks Uncle)
HD3850 512mb (overclocked 710/940 - again highest I can get it stable.

Tried overclocking again today, and couldn't even get a 1% increase stable. Something is fuxed :p

A few more sticks of 1GB DDR off eBay/MM would give a noticeable speed boost for hardly any cost!

Nah, I used to have 3GB in there, sold them because needed money at the time (before I got my job) and really haven't noticed any difference in speed or fps - still exactly the same.

1) Upgrade it a few items at a time, get the items delivered to a friend's house. Swap in the new components then sell the old ones.

2) Loosen a stick of RAM or a discrete connection, then shout your dad up to tell him it's broken and ask if he can help you fix it. Once he can't find the fault, new PC. You don't have to break it, just make them think it's broken and then you can sell on the old bits.

Can't really do it bit by bit with a P4 board can he... have to be MoBo/CPU/RAM/GPU all at once at least... someone will notice that little lot trying to slip under the radar lol

I personally think you're better off waiting until you get to uni, as others have said, your own space to do whatever you like with then isn't it :)

I know it's hard in the meantime but grin and bear it, save the money up and you'll be able to do an even bigger upgrade when the time comes mate, it'll all be worth it in the end!!

Just imagine a water cooled 2600K @ 5.5GHz running 12GB DDR3 and 2x580s ;) trust me, it'll be worth the wait :D hehehe

Cookeh can you just confirm this is your situation - You'r 17/18, old enough to have fathered children or gone to fight in a war yet your parents are telling you how to spend your own money that you've earned yourself?

i really dont want to **** your parents off but they sound like a pair of stuck up middle class snobs. i bet the house you live in is more than "what you need", i bet the car your dad drives is more than "what he needs", i bet your mam has an expensive pair of shoes which she "doesn't need" i could go on all day but what i am trying to say is, in life you need more than just the stuff you need.

i realise this may not be of any help but i had to say something, they're ****ing me off and i don't even know them. i feel for you man and i would donate a quid to a worthy cause like this rather than the waste of time save the hippo brigade.

if you have no luck try taking something of your parents which they use but dont need, for example your mams handbag and replace it with an asda carrier bag. (its usually the woman thats behind all of this)

Step 1: Grow a pair
Step 2: Upgrade PC
Step 3: Relax
Step4: (only if ranted at over upgrade) Be polite and explain that it is up to you

£100 a day at 17/18...where you work??

For the NHS.

Health Care Assistant (a nurse without a degree so I do pretty much everything a nurse does except administer drugs - it's not pretty or glamorous, but feels good and pays better :D)

I have to fight for shifts though, and can only work on weekends :p

And yes, I'm 18 and can't spend my own money. Any helpful ideas aside from "grow a pair" would be quite nice, as I can assure you I don't need a second pair.

Seriously dude, if you'r 18 and still living like a 12 year old you'll only grow out of it by 'growing a pair'.

Ignore your folks, buy whatever you want for a new PC, have it delivered to your house, be there when its delivered, assemble it, enjoy.

Its that simple, what exactly are your parents gonna do? If they actually try to take the stuff or damage it in anyway (which I doubt they would), report them for theft / vandalism.

Your money, spend it on what you want, your property.

bhavv I would do that, but it's repercussions afterwards I'm worried about. They'll be paying maintenance when I'm in Uni - £4k per year, and I don't want to jeopardize that, or I'll be >£16k in greater debt than I would be otherwise.
