Besides a recent visit to America and the usual family package holidays when I was a kid I've never gone travelling. For some time I've been thinking about ways of getting away for an extended time so I can do this.

I have a good job and house etc so life isn't bad at all. I could just go on some nice holidays and see the world but the more I think about it the more I just want to pack up and go for it without a set time limit.

The only thing stopping me at the moment it my job as it's secure, pays OK and isn't something I'd probably get when I come back. Coming home and being in my mid to late 30's with no employment doesn't really sound great.

What I'm asking is if anyone else has done this in their 30's and how it went for them. I'm currently thinging of the best way to tackle my boss about getting a couple of Months off so I can take the plunge without the risks...

So, anyone been stupid enough to give it all up?

I moved over here from Aus on a 2 year working holiday visa. I'm only 23 though and did it coming straight out of uni, so not quite what your asking lol.

Ask your work to take a sabbatical? and if you get to the end of it and decide to stay, then stay if not, go home and still have job.

Are you planning on staying?

The sabbatical is something I'm planning on asking for. I just need to figure out the correct way as my boss is slightly unusual!

I'd love to just pack up some stuff and leave to be honest, but I have no idea where I'd go to start off :p

I'm the same. I think I'd like to tackle America but visa's are a huge issue there.

However I did meet an American girl when I went as Christmas who is coming over the visit in March ;) So a visa may not be a problem if I play my cards right lol

I think I'd do Europe first, I'd love to see eastern Europe and America / South America.

I don't really have much here other then family. I also, might be unemployed this time next week so this might be a bit more appealing then.

Sounds like an ideal time to give it a go. A friend of mine travelled around Europe with an unlimited train pass for a Month. Didn't cost too much and allowed him to see most of what he wanted to.

Those train passes around Europe really do interest me, especially if they can cover (with reasonable cost compared to hostels or cheap B&Bs) night time through sleeper carriages.

no question at all

if you can go, go

and the best place (imo) is Asia

thailand would be a great place to start

friend of mine did a couple of years ago, he only went on a budget of 10K as well. took a year out to go travelling & hasn't come back. he now teaches English in Cambodia working for the Cambodian government, which is astonishing as when he left he was a truck driver :p

Quit my job at HMRC after it got even more immensely boring, went to Aus for a year and ended up extending it for a second year. Had a brilliant time and got a much better job & career prospects since I've come back. Best decision I've made

My Cousin did this about 18 months ago, she went on a round the world trip which took her about 8 months. She went with a group though so she was relatively safe. She did have her own business though & no commitments so it was just a case of her making enough money to get her round the world & paying all her bills/debts before setting off.

That's epic!

I did think about doing some volunteer work or something similar. At this time in my life money is not a proirity so as long as I'm fed and watered I'd happily do this.

Excellent :)

How are your job prospects better?

I'm thinking very seriously about it, I've still got a year and a half left on my visa but I've got to decide whether I want to try and get sponsored at a workplace and stay there for 4 years to get a perm visa, or just find some nice lass to hook onto.

Awesome idea though, I came over with 1 bag and a carry on, and met a friend over here who ended up going back home a month after I got here, and I'm loving it so far.

I'm happy it's working out for you :)

What are you doing for work at the moment?

I'm an accountant, working at a recruiting firm in the accounts dept. A little bit boring, but the guys I work with are awesome, and it pays the bills and lets me save for travelling to Europe etc.

If I had the funds I would spend a year just travelling the world and coming back home at the end with thousands of photographs that I would spend the following year sifting through and putting online and making some cash out of and then telling people about the awesome things I had seen and the people I met on the way.

What a life!

Nah I like my bed too much.

2 weeks on holiday is enough for me i get totally sick of it by the end and just want my own bed. Living out of a suitcase/backpack soon gets tiring. Then again I'm in my late 30's :D
