Twitter

Why would I care about most of it though? Any big news will be in... the news. No celebs etc have ever said anything I've been remotely interesred in. If I want to talk to people I know I can phone them or even facebook them. At least with facebook it's a bit more personal and there's a good chance for an actual conversation.
Nobody is forcing you to use it, but there's a lot of interesting stuff on there, even if you don't follow people it can be really good to search when there is breaking news, because almost all the time there will be someone tweeting from wherever it's happening. It's obviously becoming an invaluable resource for this because real news agencies are getting information from it

I communicate a lot more with people I know through twitter than I do through facebook, but that's possibly because the people I talk to use twitter more than facebook, we've been using it among my group of friends for maybe 3 years, especially when it was much smaller and the mobile stuff worked initially it was great for replacing group texts.

I think twitter is a lot more personal as usually you're using it a lot more like chat if you're having a conversation with someone, but I'd rather do that and have it drop off the bottom of my twitter feed than have a sprawling comment conversation on facebook. Horses for courses obviously, but you're daft to just say twitter is **** without really knowing anything about it.

Because there's nothing of any use at all on it. I'm not having a go, I'm just pointing out in serves no purpose at all.
Not sure what purpose you feel it should serve, it's micro-blogging?

It's another way of self-promoting/networking for me tbh, and like someone else said, I use it more as an IM than to serve a purpose for anyone else.

Gets me quick feedback on jokes sometimes too which is always handy.

Twitter is fantastic - but I don't use mine to post tweets myself. I use it to get news and updates about F1 from people like Martin Brundle and Jonathan Noble. Then there's people like SmashingMag and DesignFollow who tweet good sites for design inspiration.

It's only 12 year olds and muppets who use it only to follow 'celebrities'

Aye, this is a great application for it. I've set mine up fairly recently to help with my writing and screenwriting.

I mainly use it for football news and talking to other footballs fans, the great thing about is that you can pretty much craft your feed to what you want to see, so mine is very football orientated whilst someone else may have a music centric experience and someone else may just choose to follow stupid celebs or be obsessed with Justin Beiber.

Twitter is like any social media website. Whether you enjoy or hate it is largely dependent on how many of your friends use it and the quality of those friends.

I use Twitter for F1 and football news plus various things like software updates (phone ROMs etc). It's a very useful tool if you use it properly.

Maybe but I'd rather just see it on the news an hour later and actually get on with my life till then.

I (sometimes) prefer my news to come from the people rather than a biased news corp. Yes I am looking at you Sky News.

Oh and a burst pipe in Derby lowered our water pressure. I had the location, pictures and how and where it was affecting long before it got on the local news. That meant I was prepared and could store some water in case Severn Trent switched off supplies. Much more useful than what Lady Gaga had for breakfast.

Twitter gives you the word on the street, pure and unfiltered. It's how you use it that makes what it is.

EDIT: Oh and Twitter seems to be less full of mouthbreathers than Facebook from what I can tell.
