Hi,

I've currently got a 256GB Crucial M225 SSD - haven't got any complaints about how it runs or anything but having just bought a new system with SATA3 I've been wondering whether I would notice much of a benefit moving to a SATA 3 drive like the C300.

Anyone have any thoughts? I know it's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question to describe the benefits.... :(

Also is it still the case that RAID 0 = no TRIM and therefore gradual degradation.

Is now a bad to buy (relative to it always being bad to buy something hardware related :p)?

It's just a shame that there doesn't seem to be a meaningful price drop in the technology in the near future. I'm holding out to a 1GB/£1 price bracket. It's still at about 1GB/£1.38... needs to get much better IMO.

RAID 0 does still mean no trim I think. But I wouldn't get a C300 as the C400 is due out soon.
Ah right ok, I'll stick with my M225 for the time being then. Thanks!

To be brutally honest I think this is a bit of a foolhardy position. SSDs are architecturally completely different to HDDs (magnetic platters vs NAND), but because they are used in the same way people seem to assume that their price should track with HDD prices. Imo that's never going to happen, whilst they will obviously get more and more competitively priced they will always track with NAND prices rather than conventional HDD prices.

As said, I would wait for the C400 because, at least, the C300 will be cheaper (one would hope).

I don't see what is wrong with his position, he wasn't complaining about the fact that SSDs cost more than HDDs, just that the price per gb currently is too much for him. As with any technology they are always going to get cheaper so he's perfectly justified to wait.

Just update the firmware on ur m225. Unlike me back everything up because it killed mine stone dead, but every cloud has a silver lining because they sent me a brand new c300 in under a week for a warranty replacement. I can tell you I can notice the difference it feels a nice bit faster all round, most definitely an upgrade in terms of performance. Not that it means much but W7 score went from 7.3 to 7.9 vas well.

I tried upgrading the firmware on mine earlier (from 1916 to 2030), it failed saying "error: firmware download failed". When I rebooted it said the drive had firmware 2030, and Windows is still working ok..... :(

So, dunno what's happened really.

well you could always try again lol. I think I made the mistake trying to go to 1819 and was probably already on 1916 and it borked my drive. Still more than happy with my replacement, wish I had a sata 3 mobo to take full advantage of it but the U3S6 is doing an ok job, much better speeds than my old m225. Give it a go you have noting to loose

Apparently the message saying the firmware update had failed is quite a common occurrence after reading the thread on this firmware on the Crucial forum. However, as long as AS SSD or a similar programme is reporting the new firmware and the drive is working, it stuck OK.

My drive updated without an error message.

Yeah I found the same thread I think... bit ominous that it says its failed yet appears to work!

Ended up RMA'ing my drive because I wasn't 100% sure it was ok, got a 256GB 2.5" Crucial RealSSD C300 back as replacement. Woop!
