A thank/reputation system on the forum...

I'd like to see it implemented if only to be amazed at how quickly it gets trashed by our more ... special ... forum members. Let's face it, a large number of GD posters struggle to dress themselves; how do you think they'll get on with a popularity ... I mean thanking system?

tbh I'd be more worried about the pc games/console sections, the gfx section and the cpu section going mental in fanboy spamming of reps.

GD's will be based on lolz/down rating DD.

Sc will of course end up with the socialists constantly rating down the capitalists and vis versa.

I reckon GD would probably come off the most sensible out of it after maybe the linux and html sections.

Why does it matter what your reputation 'score' is? You stand by your posts I believe, you post pish you get a bad rep you post good people give you the time of day. Reputation is an ego thing, nothing more in my book. I don't give a stuff if I am -1 billion or +1 billion, won't impact on what I post, when or how and I suggest others could learn from that. I know about 00.000001 people on this site in person, even less would I call friends so what does it matter what people think, I am a voice with a view like everyone else and at some time people will agree and others they won't. Don't need a Rep score to align my views.

Just my 2p's worth.

I think it's more for the hardware sections were those who give good advice would be rep'd up so people would know to trust them, but in reality the fanboys would just down rate each other/anyone who disagreed and you'd end up just like now and having to check people first.

It doesn't matter how brilliant they are at advice, my 'modding' will always end in fire no matter who I follow. I have a special talent.

The whole kitchen would be in bits too and there would be blood an probably a limb somewhere.......and some broken tools and people pointing......and laughing :D

it would require reset fairly regularly to ensure that people don't just live on past reputation as once you've got say 10k+ reps or whatever then it's going to be pretty difficult to lose them even if you consistently give rubbish advice. It also may give the impression that knowledge in one area where you'd rightly be "repped" transfers to another - suppose for a second you know lots about CPUs but ventured into another area of the forums and said that you should feed a dog bars of chocolate - that's absolutely terrible advice but someone just looking at the reputation might think they know what they're talking about.

Agreed, it would be nice if the 'rep' displayed corresponded to the forum category that is parent of the post currently being viewed (e.g. Hardware, Apple, Life etc).

However one slightly fear I have is that it would excessively promote the creation of new threads because I can see the OP typically getting thanked a lot, whereas in many cases the post could easily have slotted into an older thread. This is probably one of the biggest issues with the forum even as it stands now, people constantly creating new threads on old topics, rather than adding to old threads. Not helped by the "Holy thread resurrection!" brigade either... :)

How much rep do I have?

Can I trade it in for hardware? I was thinking earlier aswel, how do you become a don, or does someone high up (possibly Spie) put a blindfold on and scroll down the user list.:p

If we were to do a "rep" system I'd personally like it to be just for the Hardware/technical sections (inc photography) rather than GD etc.

Spie uses a dartboard and a copious amount of good booze when choosing the mods and admins.
It's the only possible explanation for my position:p

No point - 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' comes to mind - people that want to give thanks can quote and say thanks :p. It relates the thanks to that thread and the post it pertains to - no need for an arbitary system...

But many people here are rude and don't bother saying thanks.

Instead they will say something like "ah right ok" or "I will bookmark that page".

Many are guilty of not replying anything at all.

Rage.

I agree with that fully.

Also, make users with X amount of posts unable to start threads outside of the technical forums. Also on top of this, people with bad rep cant start new threads.

Way to many people have started joining just to post GD. Its madness i tell you, Madness, for me GD is purgatory for when you don't have enough money to bother reading/replying in hardware sections :(

I agree that the influx of new comers over the last couple of months to OcUK has been crazy. I'm sure the forum newbie statistics would back that up.

Sandybridge is probably the reason why there are so many at the moment as OcUK have been undertaking some serious testing on the Sandybridge platform when other retailers don't really care at all.
